[Tang] In the initial stage of carbuncles and boils, when a small red-headed nodule appears with dull pain, human saliva should be applied frequently at midnight. This method is contraindicated after alcohol consumption.
Formula for treating back carbuncles and boils:
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1 liang), Chuanshanjia (Pangolin Scales, stir-fried until charred, 0.5 liang), Shengren Gu (Human Bone, preserved property, 0.5 liang), Shexiang (Musk, a small amount).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take with wine decocted from Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). For yin sores where the head is flat and inverted inward, taking this medicine will cause the sore to protrude; its efficacy cannot be fully described. For infants with smallpox presenting as black and depressed lesions, a single dose can cure it, with a success rate of nearly 100%.
[Bencao] Treating toxic qi attacking the cheeks in children, causing alarming erythema and swelling:
Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus, pitted, 2 liang), Tiannanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, raw, 2 qian), Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa Semen, 1 he).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Mix with Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) and apply topically. Immediate effect.
[Tang] "Ehe" (malignant nodules) in children occur on the neck. If they do not dissipate due to wind-cold invasion, they form scrofula (Luo Li, 瘰疬), which may ulcerate and suppurate over time. It is suitable to take Siwei Dahuang Yin (Four-Ingredient Rhubarb Drink), also known as Sixun Qingliang Yinzi.
Another formula for scrofula:
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Xijiao Jie (Rhinocerotis Cornu Segmen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, slightly soaked), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas, each 0.5 liang).
Crush the ingredients and decoct in water. Adjust dosage according to age. Avoid alcohol, wheat products, and roasted/fried foods.
Topical formula for malignant nodules:
Chixiaodou (Vigna Angularis Semen), Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus with spines), Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitras), Huangyaozi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Mubiezi (Strychni Semen, each 0.5 liang).
Grind into powder. Mix with Jizi Qing (Egg White) and apply to the affected area.
Divine effective topical formula for dissipating scrofula:
Baijiaoxiang (Boswelliae Resina), Jiangzhenxiang (Dalbergiae Odoriferae Lignum - heartwood without earthy odor), Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha).
Equal parts, grind into powder. Sprinkle on the affected area and cover with wet paper overnight for resolution.
[Tian] The treatment for Chiyou Dan (Red Wandering Carbuncle) involves taking Xijiao San (Rhino Horn Powder). Another method: first lance to release bad blood, then administer the above medicine. (See Xijiao San under Tidal Fever.)
[Tang] Pediatric erysipelas (Dan Du) results from extreme heat-toxin clashing with blood, compounded by wind pathogen invasion, causing erythema, swelling, and wandering across the body, also known as Chiyou Feng (Red Wandering Wind). If it enters the Kidney or abdomen, it is fatal. Although there are various types of erysipelas, the root cause is the same. For generalized red erysipelas with itching, or for girls aged fifteen or sixteen with unopened menstruation who develop erysipelas rashes, these are caused by wind-toxin invading the blood. It is suitable to take Fangji San (Stephania Powder).
Han Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 0.5 liang), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, each 1 fen).
Crush the ingredients and decoct with Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium). Adjust dosage according to age.
[Dan] For pediatric black spots, red patches, itchy sores, and urticaria, use Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Unblocking the Interior Powder).
Jingjie San:
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum, equal parts). Decoct in water and take orally.
Jiedu San:
Hanshuishi (Calcitum), Huashi (Talcum), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Chen Sha (Cinnabaris).
Grind the first three minerals into equal parts powder. Add a small amount of Chen Sha. Administer with Dengxin Tang (Junci Medullae Decoction) according to the child's size.
Another Formula:
Chixiaodou (Vigna Angularis Semen), Mubiezi (Strychni Semen), Xianglianzi (Quercus Fructus), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas).
Grind into powder. Mix with Cigu (Zantedeschiae Rhizoma), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Dianqing (Indigo Naturalis), honey, and water. Apply to the affected area. Surround externally with Xionghuang (Realgar). Then administer Jingjie San and Jiedu San.
[Shengji Zonglu] For pediatric exanthema to disperse toxic qi, use fresh Kucai leaves (Malvae Sieversianae Folium), squeeze out the juice, and administer small amounts orally.
[Qianjin Fang] To treat pediatric erysipelas: Take a handful of fresh Shenhuo Cao (Artemisia Capillaris or similar local herb), crush to extract juice, and apply topically. Effective.
[Milu] To treat pediatric Chiyou Dan spreading up and down, which is fatal if reaching the heart: Crush Bajiao Gen (Musa Basjoo Radix), extract juice, boil, and apply topically.
[Bingbu Shouji] To treat persistent pediatric red erysipelas: Apply Huisu Juice (Coriandri Fructus Juice) topically. Cure.
[Milu] For pediatric Chiyou Dan spreading on the body, fatal if reaching the heart: Dissolve Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) in warm water, take the concentrated liquid, and wipe it onto the erysipelas.
[Qian Yi] Danliu (erysipelas tumor) occurs when heat-toxin lodges in the cou-li (interstices), clashes with blood and qi, and manifests on the skin surface as red as cinnabar. Apply Baiyu San (White Jade Powder) topically.
Baiyu Fen (i.e., Huashi/Talcum, 1 fen), Hanshuishi (Calcitum, 0.5 liang).
Grind into powder. Mix with Rice Vinegar or fresh water and apply.
[Shanjia Qinggong] Huo Dan (Fire Erysipelas): Grind copper/iron water, mix with mud from a toilet, and apply. For pediatric Chiyou Feng: Use mud from swallow nests facing south, mix with egg white, and apply. Prick the swollen area with a needle, apply fresh fish blood; this is excellent.
[Dan] Pediatric Tianhuo Dan (Heaven Fire Erysipelas) arising from the umbilicus/waist: If the color is bright red, it is manageable. Stir-fry Earthworm Mud, grind finely, and apply with Sesame Oil.
[Tian] Another method: Use Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 1 liang, remove tips), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), chop fresh, decoct in one large cup of water, strain, and mix with Fulonggan (Dwelling House Earth) for topical application.
[Shanjia Qinggong] Pediatric Red Erysipelas: Grind Fulonggan into powder, mix with Bajiao You (Banana Oil) for application. Another formula: Burn Peacock feathers and Goose feathers to ash, mix with Sesame Oil for application.
[Tang] Another topical formula for erysipelas that resolves completely in one night: Use Huarui Shi (Pyritum), mix with natural juices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). Apply with a goose feather brush; this is optimal.
Case: The daughter of Marshal Zhang San, aged fifteen, suffered from this condition. Many doctors tried hundreds of medicines without success. I was summoned to examine her. I prescribed Shengliao Siwu Tang (Raw Four Substances Decoction) plus Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). She recovered in one day.
Shengliao Siwu Tang: Treats sores caused by blood-heat, generalized swelling and itching, and cases with weak spleen/stomach intolerant to cold purgatives like Dahuang.
Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, each 0.5 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1.5 qian).
Crush the ingredients, decoct in water. Adjust dosage according to age. Avoid alcohol, wheat products, pork, mutton, and tofu.
[Dan] Pediatric Chi Liu (Red Sliding Erysipelas) primarily injures blood-heat. Use Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) and other bitter herbs with exterior-releasing properties. Topically apply Bajiao You (Banana Oil).
[Shiyi] For itchy erysipelas: Mash Leijiu (Allii Tuberosi Rhizoma) with salt and Sesame Oil. Rub with hands until warm, then wipe over the erysipelas. Immediate cure.
[Dan] Pediatric Danliu: Five Castor Seeds (Bibazi), peel, grind, add one spoonful of flour, mix with water, and apply. Very effective.
[Bencao] Ten types of pediatric Danliu swelling/toxicity, their manifestations, and treatments:
1. Feizao Dan (Flying Stove Erysipelas): Starts with swelling at the crown. Apply natural juice of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus).
2. Guzao Dan (Ancient Stove Erysipelas): Red, swollen, painful head. Apply Chixiaodou powder mixed with egg white. (Same as Tan's formula; applicable anywhere.)
3. Guohuo Dan (Ghost Fire Erysipelas): Red swelling starting from the face. Apply Zaoxintu (Stove Heart Earth) mixed with egg white. (Applicable anywhere; excellent.)
4. Tianhuo Dan (Heaven Fire Erysipelas): Red spots starting from the back. Apply Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) powder mixed with Yangzhi (Sheep Fat).
5. Tianzao Dan (Heaven Stove Erysipelas): Red, swollen, yellowish from both kidneys (or arms). Apply Liu Ye (Salix Leaf) ash mixed with water.
6. Shuidan (Water Erysipelas): Flaccid swelling from both hypochondria. Apply Shengtiexie (Iron Filings) powder mixed with Pig Dung.
7. Huhuo Dan (Barbarian Fire Erysipelas): Yellow swelling starting from the umbilicus. Apply Binglang (Arecae Semen) powder mixed with Rice Vinegar.
8. Yehuo Dan (Wild Fire Erysipelas): Red swelling from both feet. Apply Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina) powder mixed with Sheep Fat.
9. Yanhuo Dan (Smoke/Fire Erysipelas): Red and white spots from both feet. Apply Tu from under pig troughs mixed with Hemp Seed Oil.
10. Hulou Dan (Barbarian Leak Erysipelas): Yellow swelling starting from the genitals. Apply Tu from under leaking roofs mixed with Sheep Fat.
These ten types of erysipelas change rapidly. Delayed treatment leads to incurability. Therefore, I share this formula freely. Carefully distinguish each type and treat accordingly; success is almost guaranteed. If untreated for three days and the pathogen invades the zang-fu organs, it becomes incurable. Do not delay.
[Dan] Chiyou Feng (Red Wandering Wind) spreading up and down the body to the heart is fatal. Wash with Suo Luo Jian (Callicarpa Decoction). (In *Zimu Milu*, Suo Luo refers to Baihua Cao/Callicarpa nudiflora.)
[Shiyi] Onset within the first hundred days is invariably fatal and untreatable.
