[Qian Yi] Zhihan San (Stop Sweat Powder): Treats night sweats caused by deficiency heat.
Ingredients: Oyster Shell (Muli), Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang) (equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, decoct in water for oral administration, to be taken at any time without restriction.
Night sweats refer to spontaneous sweating during sleep, which is due to muscle deficiency; it is primarily treated with Zhihan San (Stop Sweat Powder). Generalized sweating over the whole body is primarily treated with Xianggua Wan (Melon Pill).
Zhihan San (Stop Sweat Powder):
Use the ash of an old palm fan, grind it into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine, to be taken at any time. If unavailable, substitute with old palm grass.
Huzhang San (Polygonum Divaricatum Powder): Treats night sweats caused by excess heat.
Decoct Polygonum Divaricatum Stem (Huzhang) in water for oral administration. The dosage depends on the severity of the condition; take at any time.
[Hai Zang] The son of a Jin Dynasty Langzhong (Official) suffered from night sweats for seven years from infancy to childhood, and various medicines were ineffective. I administered Liangge San (Cooling the Chest Powder) and Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellows Pill), and the illness was cured within three days. This is because the Kidney governs the five fluids, transforming them into five dampnesses. Ministerial Fire (Xianghuo) forces the Kidney Water to ascend, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian by exploiting the deficiency of the Heart. Heart Fire flares upward and enters the Lung, bullying the Lung Metal which cannot control the Heart Fire. Consequently, the skin pores open, and the Couli (interstices) and Xuanfu (pores) fail to close, leading to sweating. Sweating that occurs during sleep is called night sweats, as it ceases upon waking; thus, the Classic states: "Sweating during sleep indicates aversion to wind." First, use Liangge San (Cooling the Chest Powder) to drain the ministerial fire in the chest. Once the ministerial fire recedes, use Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellows Pill) to drain Heart Fire to assist Yin nourishment. Then Kidney Water returns to its home organ, the Xuanfu closes, and sweating stops spontaneously.
[Worldly Physicians] To treat pediatric night sweats: Apply Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome (Yujin) powder to the area below both nipples; immediate effect is observed.
[Qian Yi] Treatment has distinctions: In the case of the Zhang family's three sons, the eldest had generalized sweating, the second had sweating from the top of the head down to the chest, and the youngest had sweating only on the forehead. Many physicians treated them with Maijian San (Wheat Decoction Powder) without success. Qian said: Give Xianggua Wan (Melon Pill) to the eldest, Yipi San (Spleen-Boosting Powder, i.e., Yihuang San) to the second, and Shigao Tang (Gypsum Decoction) to the youngest. All recovered after five days of medication.
Xianggua Wan (Melon Pill):
Ingredients: Picrorhiza Rhizome (Huhuanglian), Large Cucumber (one yellow one), Rheum Palmatum Root (Dahuang, wrapped in wet paper and roasted), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu, removed rhizome), Turtle Carapace (Biejia, vinegar-fried until yellow), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Aloe (Luhui), Tangerine Peel (Qingpi) (equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Except for the cucumber, grind all other ingredients into a fine powder. Cut off the top of the cucumber, fill it completely with the medicinal powder, replace the top, and secure it with a stick. Roast it in fire until cooked. Mix the cucumber and medicine with wheat paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 2-3 pills per dose, after meals, washed down with cold grain water or fresh well water. For older children, take 5-7 pills, not exceeding 10.
Stomach Qi deficiency leads to sweating from the top of the head down to the navel; this is due to Stomach deficiency and should be tonified with Stomach-tonifying methods, primarily using Yihuang San (Yellow-Boosting Powder).
[Qian Yi] Deficiency of the Six Yang meridians results in sweating reaching the top of the head but not passing the chest; no treatment is required. Preference for thick clothing with sweating on the forehead during sleep is primarily treated with Zhihan San (Stop Sweat Powder).
