[Tang] Mu She (Wooden Tongue) refers to a condition where the tongue swells and gradually enlarges until it fills the entire mouth. If not treated urgently, it can cause airway obstruction and death.
[Tian] Treatment for Mu She: Use one fen of Zixue (Purple Snow) from the *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*, mixed with half he of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap). Apply this mixture to the mouth frequently; the swelling will subside naturally.
[Dan] For pediatric Mu She: Powder Baicaoshuang (Charred Grass), Huashi (Talcum), and Mangxiao (Mirabilite). Mix with wine and apply topically.
[Dan] When rice-grain-like lesions appear on the tongue: Apply juice extracted from Sangbaipi (Morus Alba Root Bark). Two or three applications yield excellent results.
[Tang] Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction): Treats heat in the Ying (Nutritive) level, Lung Qi stagnation, epistaxis with ulceration, and all types of Danshu (Red Toxic Heat/Cellulitis).
Ingredients: Shengdihuang (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix), Chishao Yao (Red Peony Root), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) — equal parts.
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs, decoct in water, strain, and adjust dosage according to age. If epistaxis is present, add a small amount of Sheng Puhuang (Raw Pollen Typhae) near the end of decoction. If ulcers are present, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) in equal proportion. For Danshu, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) in equal proportion.
Decoct together; this formula has proven effective repeatedly.
For epistaxis occurring in spring and winter: Grind Shengdihuang to extract juice, add a small amount of Sheng Puhuang, mix with rock sugar soaked in well water, and drink to cure.
For epistaxis occurring in autumn and summer: Take a handful of Cheqiancao (Plantaginis Herba), wash clean, and grind together with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) to extract juice. Add one spoonful of Shengmi (Raw Honey). First, pack the residue mixed with honey into the nostrils. Then, drink the mixture of fresh water, honey, Cheqiancao juice, and Shengjiang juice. This yields immediate recovery.
Another prescription: Extract natural juice from fresh Luobo (Raphani Fructus) root. Have the patient tilt their head back and drip the juice into the nasal cavity to stop bleeding immediately. Subsequently, drink fresh water mixed with honey and Luobo juice for good effect.
[Qian] Changpu Wan (Acorus Pill): Treats children who cannot speak at five or six years of age due to Heart Qi deficiency.
Ingredients: Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 3 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix) and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, both de-core, 1 liang each), Chishizhi (Halloysit Rubra, 2 qian). The *Zhizhi Fang* also includes Danggui, Chuanxiong, and Zhusha (Cinnabaris).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. Administer 10–20 pills with warm water, two to three times daily. Long-term use yields efficacy.
For post-illness muteness due to Kidney deficiency, combine with Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). (Zhang Yuansu stated: Dihuang Wan tonifies the Foot-Shaoyin [Kidney] meridian, working in conjunction with Changpu Wan to unblock the meridians vertically.)
Jitou Wan (Chicken Head Pill): Treats post-illness muteness in children.
Ingredients: Xiongjitou (Rooster’s head, roasted, one), Mingchan (Cicada slough, roasted until scorched, three), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, baked, 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 liang), Danggui (3 fen), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.5 liang each), Chuanxiong, Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, de-core), Maidong (de-core, 3 fen each).
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of small mung beans. Take five pills with rice broth at dawn, and three to four times on an empty stomach. Increase dosage for older children; long-term use yields results. Regarding chickens and cicadas, use those that have died naturally; do not kill them freshly. As Sun Simiao said, killing life to seek life moves one further away from life.
[Hai] Bai She Niao (Thrush/Song Thrush), now known as Ying (Oriole), alias Fanshe (Reverse Tongue), treats pediatric muteness when roasted and eaten. It also treats insect bites.
[Qian] Shen Qie Shi Yin (Kidney Weakness causing Loss of Voice) is similar. It occurs after vomiting, diarrhea, or severe illness. Although the voice box functions, speech is impaired because Kidney Qi is too weak to connect upward with Yang. This should be treated with Dihuang Wan to tonify the Kidney. Shi Yin (Loss of Voice) is typically a sudden onset disease. Persistent Jing Jin (Trismus/Jaw Lock) leads to Shi Yin. Chi Yan (Slurred Speech) is similar.
[Ming] For children aged five to six who cannot speak: Moxibustion on Xinshu (BL-15, Heart Shu point), 3 moxa cones.
