[From *Huoyou Xinshu*] Rusheng Bingzi (Like-Sage Pills): Treats pediatric smallpox/rubella where toxic heat attacks the throat, causing swelling and pain. (Zhang Yuansu stated: This formula follows the meridian; this single prescription is an example of following the meridian.)
Babao Tongxiao Pian (Fructus Arctii, stir-fried) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, each 1 liang) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed, 0.5 liang) Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi, 1 liang)
Grind the above into powder, add Zhuye (Leaf of Bambusa) to decoct together, and take slowly in small doses. (Zhang Yuansu stated: Reducing Maidong and Zhuye yields Ganjie Shunianzi Tang [Licorice and Platycodi and Arctii Decoction], treating throat obstruction.)
Shunianzi Tang (Arctii Decoction), Xiaodu Yin (Detoxification Decoction) (Both formulas are listed under the previous section "Slow Eruption of Smallpox/Rubella".)
[From Yunqizi] When pediatric smallpox/rubella desires to erupt, if there is skin fever and throat obstruction, use Gancao Jiegeng Shengma Tang [Licorice, Platycodi, and Cimicifuga Decoction].
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang) Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi, 1 liang) Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 0.5 liang)
Cut finely, take one large qian per dose, decoct with water and drink.
[From Qian Yi] Ganlu Yinzi (Sweet Dew Decoction): Treats Heart heat, throat pain, mouth and tongue sores, and can be taken whether smallpox/rubella has erupted or not. Also treats tooth root swelling and pain caused by heat attacking upwards.
Shengdi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) Shudi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata) Tiantaomen Dong (Herba Asparagi) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed) Pipaye (Folium Eriobotryae, hairs removed) Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, stir-fried) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, heart removed) Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii, roots removed) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, stir-fried) Shanyinyen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae)
Take equal parts of the above, grind into coarse powder, take 2 qian per dose, decoct with one zhan of water, and take warm after meals. For tooth swelling and pain, gargle and ingest. (Zhang Yuansu stated: Ganlu Yinzi is a blood-cooling agent.)

[From Zhu Danxi] Doufeng (Smallpox Wind) must be differentiated by deficiency and excess of Qi and Blood, monitored by days of onset; it often involves deficiency of Qi and Blood. In deficiency cases, use blood-nourishing agents to assist, slightly aided by wind-dispelling herbs. In excess cases, Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) and Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) are the sovereign herbs, with Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci), etc., as ministering herbs. If it belongs to cold, Chen’s formula may be used.
Ms. Yang, aged over ten, had incomplete eruption of smallpox/rubella. After scabs fell off, she experienced joint pain, poor appetite, and occasional night fever. This indicates residual toxins remaining inside, with severe deficiency making dredging difficult. One must employ unblocking methods within tonification. This formula governs the condition.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Baizhu (Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae, each 1 qian) Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, 2 fen) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 qian) Tongcao (Medulla Tetrapanacis) Gancaogen (Radix Glycyrrhizae, roasted. Each 3 fen) Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, 5 fen) Sugeng (Caulis Perillae, 3 fen)
Chop the above, add three slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct with water, and take warm.
A seven-year-old boy had incomplete initial eruption of smallpox/rubella. Toxic qi attacked internally, causing joint pain, inability to straighten both legs, scars lacking ruddy vitality, floating and harmonious pulse, and scanty dark urine.
Guishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Baizhu (Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae, each 1 qian) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) Mutong (Caulis Akebiae) Xijiaoxie (Cornu Rhinocerotis, sliced) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae, each 5 fen) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, lightly roasted)
