[Haizang] Residual toxins from sores and rashes, if the Liver is deficient, invade the eyes; if the Lungs are deficient, manifest as tinea and scabies, or form carbuncles and furuncles. Toxems erupting in the bone joints indicate Kidney deficiency; those erupting in the muscles indicate Spleen deficiency. The toxin may reside in the sinews, head, or face, or cause dental caries and decay, or induce soreness and swelling of the throat. These manifestations follow the meridians, all resulting from toxins that fail to dissipate and accumulate. This may be due to the patient not seeking treatment early, or the physician failing to treat correctly, leaving the toxin lingering in the meridians. The origin of these conditions has its own causes. It is appropriate to administer detoxifying formulas.
[Shixian] Dacne (smallpox/rubella) toxins attacking the Spleen cause diarrhea and bodily edema; attacking the Liver cause ocular nebulae (corneal opacities); attacking the Heart cause restlessness and crying; attacking the Kidneys cause earache and pus accumulation; attacking the Lungs cause coughing and excessive phlegm.
[Danxi] To treat residual toxins from pediatric smallpox/rubella that have not dissipated, caused by eating grain too early which trapped the toxic qi:
Arctii Fructus (Niu Bang Zi, 6 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 5 fen), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xi Jiao, 3 qian), Schizonepetae Herba (Jing Jie) and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng, 1 qian each), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu, 3 qian), Aurantii Fructus (Zhi Ke, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take warm.
[Danxi] If dacne toxins damage the eyes, one must use Gardeniae Fructus (Zhi Zi), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chi Shao), Cassiae Semen (Jue Ming), Paeoniae Radix Rubra caulis (Gui Xu), Forsythiae Fructus (Lian Qiao), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng), Platycodonis Radix (Jie Geng), and Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Sheng Ma), prepared as a fine powder in a small dose for oral administration with water. If vision is lost, after more than one hundred days, when Qi and Blood have fully recovered, vision will naturally clear.
[Zhang Bing] To treat post-rash toxins attacking the eyes, causing nebulae, redness, or blackening: Use Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Jing Jie and Fang Feng, decocted and taken. Concurrently, grind equal parts of Black Bean Skin (Hei Dou Pi), Centipediniae Herba (Gu Jing Cao), Concha Meretricis et Cyclinae (Hai Ge), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) into a fine powder. Dip slices of cooked pork liver into the powder and consume. This is miraculous. (Another prescription for dacne-induced ocular nebula uses Jiangxi Concha Meretricis et Cyclinae, Black Bean Skin, Gan Cao, and Buddlejae Flos (Mi Meng Hua) in equal parts, ground and taken orally.)
[Danxi] For nebulae appearing after dacne, effective after several doses: Use Equal parts of Clematidis Radix et Caulis (Wei Ling Xian) and Epimedii Folium (Xian Ling Pi). Wash clean, avoid fire and sun, grind into a fine powder. Take an appropriate amount at any time, preferably administered with rice wash water during the third meal. Qian's Huang Bo Gao (Phellodendron Ointment) is applied to the face to protect the eyes when dacne first appears. (Formula see "Da Fa of Dacne"). Tiao Gan San (Regulate Liver Powder) treats severe rash eruptions, preventing toxins from entering the eyes. (Formula see "Mi of Dacne"). Yang Gan San (Sheep Liver Powder, i.e., Mi Meng San below, see "Huo Ren" section). Chan Tui San (Cicada Slough Powder) treats toxins entering the eyes; for cases within half a year, effectiveness is seen within one month.
Pig/Sheep Hoof Horns (2 liang, sealed in a jar with salt mud, calcined to retain nature), Cicada Slough (Chan Ke, cleaned of dirt, powdered, 1 liang).
Grind these two ingredients together with 2 fen of finely powdered Antilopis Cornu (Ling Yang Jiao). Mix well. Take 1 zi per dose. For infants under 100 days, take 1-2 fen; for 3-year-olds, take 3-4 fen. Administer with Jiang Shui (fermented rice water) or fresh water, 3-4 times daily, 1-2 times at night, after meals. Cases lasting over one year are incurable.
To treat rash toxins entering the eyes.
Polyporus Umbellatus (Ma Pi Bo, 0.5 liang), Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zao Jia Zi, 14 grains), Serpent Skin (She Pi, 0.5 liang).
Place in a small jar, seal with salt mud, calcine to retain nature, grind fine. Take 3 qian mixed with warm wine, after meals.
To treat rash toxins entering the eyes or forming nebulae.
Trichosanthis Radix (Gua Lou Gen, 0.5 liang), Serpent Skin (She Pi, 2 qian).
Grind into a fine powder. Slice one sheep liver, insert 2 qian of powder, tie securely with hemp thread, and cook thoroughly in rice wash water. Feed frequently to the child. If the child cannot eat liver, the nursing mother should consume it abundantly.
Alternative method: Use Cicada Slough powder, mixed with boiled sheep liver soup, 2-3 qian per dose.
[Haizang] Di Huang San (Rehmannia Powder) treats pediatric excess heat in the Heart and Liver, causing red, swollen, painful eyes, red nebulae, or white membranes obscuring the pupil. Diffuse peripheral cases are easier to treat. Sudden obscuration of the cornea often leads to blindness; use this formula immediately. It also treats rash toxins entering the eyes.
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui, 1 fen each), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian) and Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang, roasted, 1 qian each), Raw Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di, heart removed) and Akebiae Caulis (Mu Tong, 1.5 qian each), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng) and Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qiang Huo), Raw Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xi Jiao, powdered), Cicada Slough (Chan Tui, cleaned), Equiseti Herba (Mu Zei), Centipediniae Herba (Gu Jing Cao), Tribuli Fructus (Bai Ji Li, 1 qian each), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 1.5 qian), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen, 5 fen), Astragali Complanati Semen (Sha Yuan Ji Li, 1 qian).
Grind into a fine powder. Take 1 zi or 5 fen per dose, adjusted for age. Mix with sheep liver soup decoction, take after meals, 3 times daily, once at night. Observe dietary restrictions. Effective for adults as well.
[Yuan] To treat wind-heat toxins from dacne causing nebulae and membranes obscuring the pupil, use Xie Qing Wan (Drain Blue Pill) for great efficacy. It is easy to treat in the initial stages.
[Yun] Dissolve 2 pills of Xie Qing Wan in Bamboo Leaf Decoction (Zhu Ye Tang) mixed with sugar water. Induce mild diarrhea gradually for miraculous effects.
[Huo Ren Shu] For toxins entering the eyes. Use Jue Ming San, Bo Yun San, Mi Meng Hua San, Tong Sheng San, or Ha Fen San. However, no formulas exceed those in this book. [Haizang comments]: It is better to select herbs according to the meridian during the illness to prevent toxins from transferring to the eyes, which is superior. Nevertheless, since the eyes correspond to the Five Wheels, one must investigate accordingly. This statement addresses misdiagnosis/mistreatment.
Jue Ming San (Cassia Seed Powder) treats rash/dacne entering the eyes. Haizang states: This is a Shaoyang and Taiyin formula.
Cassiae Semen (Jue Ming Zi) and Trichosanthis Semen (Gua Lou Ren, 0.5 liang each), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chi Shao Yao) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, roasted, 1 fen each).
Grind into a fine powder, add a little Moschus (She Xiang), mix evenly. Take 2 qian per dose with raw rice wash water, before bed.
Bo Yun San (Cloud-Piercing Powder) treats rash/dacne entering the eyes and forming nebulae.
Use authentic Mantis Egg Case (Sang Piao Xiao, 1 liang), roast until scorched, grind fine, add a little Moschus (She Xiang). Take 2 qian per dose with rice wash water.
Mi Meng Hua San (Buddleja Flower Powder) treats pediatric dacne entering the eyes and innocent malnutrition (Gan Qi) entering the eyes.
Buddlejae Flos (Mi Meng Hua, 3 liang), Celosiae Semen (Qing Xiang Zi), Cassiae Semen (Jue Ming Zi), Plantaginis Semen (Che Qian Zi, 1 liang each).
Mix powders evenly. Slice a large piece of sheep liver thinly, sprinkle powder on it, wrap in wet paper, and bake/cook. Take on an empty stomach according to tolerance. [Qian Yi, Haizang note: This is the Sheep Liver Powder.]
Tong Sheng San (Supreme Unity Powder) treats rubella/dacne entering the eyes and forming nebulae.
White Chrysanthemi Flos (Bai Ju Hua; substitute with Sweet Chrysanthemum if unavailable, but White is preferred), Mung Bean (Lu Dou), Centipediniae Herba (Gu Jing Cao, root removed, 1 liang).
Grind into a fine powder. Take 1 Da Qian per dose with one dried persimmon and one cup of rice wash water. Decoct together until the rice water is exhausted. Eat only the deseeded persimmon. No fixed time, 3 pieces daily. Effect seen in 5-7 days for recent cases, or half a month for distant cases.
Ha Fen San (Clam Powder) treats pediatric rash entering the eyes.
Centipediniae Herba (Gu Jing Cao) and Concha Meretricis et Cyclinae (Ha Fen, equal parts).
Grind into a fine powder. Take 1 Qian Bi per dose. Slice approx. 1 liang of pork liver, sprinkle powder, roll up, wrap in bamboo leaf, tie with hemp thread. Boil in one bowl of water until cooked. Pour into a narrow-necked porcelain bottle to fumigate the eyes. When warm, remove and eat. Once daily, resolves within 10 days.
