[Haizang] The "Jie" disease (a type of infectious childhood disease characterized by abdominal distension and relapsing symptoms) in infants: if the mother is pregnant while breastfeeding, the infant may fall ill with symptoms resembling malaria or dysentery. Later, other children who come into contact will also sequentially develop abdominal distension, with the condition remitting or recurring. Even proximity to others can lead to transmission.
People in the North were unfamiliar with this disease. Pregnant women would take the feathers of the Shrike (Bailao bird, *Lanius* spp.) and wear them, or use a whip made from branches trodden by the bird to strike the child, aiming to hasten speech development. The commentary on *Zheng Li* states: "Qu, is the Bolao bird." The *Chu Ci* says: "Hearing the Qu calling outside," referring to its unpleasant cry. The *Baize Tu* states: "Dust fighting in the house is an ill omen," referring to the Shrike; thus it was used to treat the "Jie" disease. The *Bencao* records: The Shrike has a neutral flavor and is toxic; its feathers are used to treat pediatric "Jie" disease.
[Shengji Zonglu] To treat infants over ten months old whose mothers become pregnant again, causing the child to suffer from mental dullness and physical emaciation, termed "Jie" disease. Use Fu Yi (Bat, *Vespertilionidae*) burned to ash, finely ground, and administered with rice gruel, 5 fen per dose, four to five times daily for efficacy. If roasted until fragrant and chewed to feed the child, it is also effective. (i.e., Bat.)
[Wuze] The *Qianjin Fang* discusses pediatric "Jie" disease, attributing it to evil spirits guiding the fetus during pregnancy, envying the child, and causing this illness. "Jie" is also the name of a little ghost. Symptoms include mild diarrhea, alternating chills and fever, and hair/eyebrows that are yellow, thin, and lack luster. Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction) is suitable. Whenever a woman has an infant who cannot yet walk, and she becomes pregnant again, allowing the infant to drink this milk will also induce "Jie" disease. This results in the child becoming sallow, emaciated with prominent bones, suffering from fever and hair loss.
Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction) treats newborns with abundant blood and qi, high fever/chills, limb convulsions, and vomiting. If the child can already take supplementary food but suffers from abdominal fullness and indigestion, high fever, unresolved "bianzheng" (physiological fever in infants), invasion by external malevolent qi, and various convulsions/epilepsy, this formula governs all such cases.
Ingredients:
Longdan Cao (Radix Gentianae, 2.5 qian each)
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 2.5 qian each)
Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 2.5 qian each)
Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi, 2.5 qian each)
Gouteng Pi (Cortex Uncariae, 2.5 qian each)
Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 2.5 qian each)
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 2.5 qian each)
Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos, 2.5 qian each)
Dinglang (Coleopterus Silphidae, 2 specimens)
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Prepared by baking, 1 liang)
Grind the above into coarse powder. Boil in one sheng of water until reduced to five he, constituting one dose. Children under ten years old may take this. For infants aged one to seven days, divide one he into three doses; eight to fifteen days, divide 1.5 he into three doses; sixteen to twenty days, divide two he into three doses; twenty to thirty days, divide three he into three doses. Stop administration once bowel movements are achieved. This dosage is designed for newborns. For older children, follow this example proportionally. If confirmed as invasion by external malevolent qi (Kewu) or ghostly qi, add Renshen (Radix Ginseng) and Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), each 2.5 qian. For a 100-day-old infant, add 1 qian 1 fen; for a 200-day-old infant, add 2.5 qian; for a one-year-old, add half a liang. Other herbs should be adjusted similarly.
[Haizang] Living transmission is called "Xiangji" (Successive Infection). Death from it is called "Chuanshi" (Corpse Transmission). Having pulse but no breath is called "Shijue" (Corpse Syncope). Having breath but no pulse is called "Xingshi" (Walking Corpse). Dingxi, Bulu, Kewu, and Wugu are four distinct diseases. Yangyi, Yinyi, Baihe, and Huhuo are four peculiar diseases.
