[From *Suwen*] The Yellow Emperor asked, "When a woman is pregnant (Chongshen), how should toxic drugs be used?" Qibo replied, "If there is an existing pathology (Yougu), there will be no injury to the mother, nor to the fetus." The Emperor said, "I wish to hear the reason; what does this mean?" Qibo said, "For large accumulations (Daji) and large masses (Daju), it is permissible to use harsh treatments. Stop when the pathogenic factor has diminished by more than half; exceeding this limit leads to death." (*Suwen: Liuyuan Zhengji Dalun*)
[Zhu Danxi] For blood masses (Xuekuai) as large as a plate, where pregnancy makes the use of harsh agents difficult, this formula is indicated.

A thirty-eight-year-old woman from Nanshan had her menstruation on September 23rd, ten days later than usual. She took herbal medicine intending to induce abortion by damaging the blood (Baixue). Only a few drops of blood were discharged, after which she suffered from abdominal pain. A mass the size of a bowl formed in the lower abdomen, which was tender to touch. Pain subsided slightly with hot compresses. There was pulling pain during urination and defecation; urination was difficult and scanty. Defecation yielded a small amount of reddish fecal matter. Appetite was lost, mouth was slightly dry, and fever was present. This condition arose because the Stomach Qi (Weiqi) was damaged by the herbs, and the injured blood flowed recklessly without being able to discharge.
