[Qian Yi] When bathing infants, if the umbilicus is not dried thoroughly after wiping, wind pathogen may invade and cause sores, leading to "cuokou" (mouth contraction/tetanus-like symptoms) in the infant. Severe cases involve deficiency of Stomach Qi and disharmony of Qi, characterized by frequent mouth contraction; the primary treatment is Tiaoqi Yihuang San (Regulate Qi and Enrich Yellow Powder).
Peripatus chinensis (one piece) Scorpion tail (four tails) Bombyx Batryticatus (seven pieces) Dianthus superbus (5 fen)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. First, use a goose feather tube to blow a bean-sized amount of powder into the infant's nostrils. If sneezing and crying occur, recovery is possible. Subsequently, administer with Mint Decoction.
[Qian Yi] Baimo San (Cortex Phellodendri and Soot Powder): Treats injury from water and dampness after umbilical cord separation, or invasion of moisture from clothing into the umbilicus, or exposure to wind-cold due to loose bandaging. This leads to limb disharmony, umbilical swelling, excessive crying, and inability to suckle in infants. Prompt treatment is required.
Phellodendri Cortex (Cortex Phellodendri Amurensis) Fuxia Mo (Soot from the bottom of the cauldron) Rufa (Burnt. Each 5 fen)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Apply a small amount externally each time.
[Zhang Gao] Umbilical Tetanus: Use two liang of salt and two he of fermented soybeans (Douchi), pound them into cakes the size of coins, heat them, and apply as a hot compress to the umbilicus. Additionally, apply Cortex Phellodendri powder externally.
[Yao Sengyuan] Infant Umbilical Swelling: Heat Cinnamon Twig and apply as a hot compress, four to five times daily.
[Secret Transmission] Umbilical Tetanus Sores: Use old soil from an east-facing wall, grind it, and apply externally.
[Shengji Zonglu] For long-standing umbilical tetanus that becomes sore and does not heal, apply Zaoshixin (Fulonggan/Heart of the Kitchen Earth). Alternatively, burn Portulaca Oleracea leaves into powder and apply externally. (From Qianjin Fang)
[Zimu Milu] Treating red and swollen umbilicus in infants: Pound Almond seeds into a paste and apply to the swollen umbilicus.
[Shengji Zonglu] Treating continuous discharge from the umbilicus accompanied by redness and swelling in infants: Use Calcined Alum, grind finely, and apply externally.
[Shiyi Dexiao Fang] Treating infants whose umbilical wounds, injured during cutting, are exposed to external wind, causing sores that do not heal: Use equal parts of Alum and Ochra Alba, grind together into powder, and apply a small amount externally. Another prescription: Burn cotton into ash, grind finely, and sprinkle dry powder on the lesion each time.
[Zhang Gao] Cuokou (Mouth Contraction): Boil branches of Albizia Julibrissin, use the decoction to wipe the mouth and wash, which leads to recovery.
[Tian] Treatment for Cuokou: Grind White Bombyx Batryticatus into powder, mix with honey, and apply to the infant's anus. Alternatively, use one qian of Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) and one he of Bamboo Sap, applying to the mouth occasionally until recovery.
[Anonymous] Within seven days after birth, if an infant suddenly suffers from umbilical tetanus and cuokou, various medicines often fail, leaving one to watch helplessly, which is truly pitiable. There is a method rarely known in the world: for any case of this syndrome, observe small blisters like millet grains on the infant's gums. Dip a cloth soaked in warm water around your finger and gently break the blisters. The infant will open their mouth and calm down immediately. This is spiritually effective without medicine.
For newborns with umbilical tetanus and cuokou where all medicines fail: Moxibustion at RanGu (KI2), located in the depression anterior to the prominence of the medial malleolus. Perform three moxa cones. Acupuncture depth is three fen; bleeding should be avoided. Effect is immediate.
[Jiaying Jing) For umbilical tetanus with eyes rolling upward, puncture Sizhukong (TE23).
[Mingtang] Umbilical Swelling: The joint space between the lumbar vertebrae corresponding to the umbilicus. (Three moxa cones.)
[Shiyi Dexiao Fang] Umbilical tetanus and cuokou are difficult to treat if not addressed within the first hundred days.
