[Zheng Zhi Zhun Sheng] Night Blindness, inability to see at night:
Acupoints: Shen Ting, Shang Xing, Qian Ding, Bai Hui (Prick each to bleed, apply salt to the wound, immediate cure.)
Alternative method: Zhao Hai, Gan Shu.
[Su Wen] Jue syndrome causes blindness. When a person suffers from Jue (reversal of qi), Yang qi gathers in the upper part, and Yin qi gathers in the lower part. Yang gathering in the upper part means Fire alone shines; Yin gathering in the lower part means cold feet, and cold feet lead to abdominal distension. Since Kidney Water cannot control the Fire of the Five Zang organs, blindness occurs. Thus, there is Qi rushing and continuous tearing. When Wind pathogen invades the eyes, Yang qi guards internally within the Essence. This is Fire burning the eyes, so tears flow upon exposure to wind. This can be compared to: strong wind generates rain; this is of the same category. (From "Jie Jing Wei Lun")
[Zhang Hezi] Any tearing caused by Wind impact, commonly called "Cold Tears," is incorrect. Wind impacts internally, Fire erupts externally. Wind and Heat struggle together, causing tears. Treating both internal and external aspects leads to cure.
Treating the exterior: Use one piece of white, fine-grained Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), add seven grains of Hu Jiao (Pepper). Do not touch copper or iron. Grind finely and apply to the eye before sleep.
Treating the interior: Take Dang Gui Yin Zi (Angelica Decoction).
Ingredients: Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Shao Yao (Peony Root) (each 1 liang), Hua Shi (Talcum, half liang).
Preparation and Administration: Cut into pieces. Take 3-5 qian per dose. Add one bowl of water and three slices of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger). Decoct to 70% volume, strain, and take warm.
Theory: The Liver governs tears. (See full text in the Five Zang section.)
[Li Geng (Yuan)] Water follows Wood's tendency to rise upwards, causing eye dryness, discharge, and cold tears. All these are due to deficiency of Lung Metal, leading to Liver Wood lacking restraint.
[Sun Simiao] During the reign of Emperor Yingzong, Guo Po Po suffered from cold tears. Ophthalmologists treated her for two or three years without success. The Emperor summoned Sun Simiao. Upon arrival, Sun said, "I am not an ophthalmologist, but I have medicine. Allow me to present a prescription." The prescription used: Shi Jue Ming (Abalone Shell, 1 liang), Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean, 1.5 liang), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, 5 qian), Sheng Ban Mao (Mylabris Beetle, 21 grains, stir-fried to remove head and feet), Mu Zei (Equisetum Rami, 5 qian). Grind into powder, make pills with ginger juice, size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose with ginger soup. After presenting the formula, the Emperor ordered the ophthalmologists to review it. They reported, "This formula is irrelevant to ophthalmology. Ban Mao is toxic and may damage the viscera. We dare not use it." They requested further imperial instruction. Guo Po Po heard this and said, "The ophthalmologists not only cannot cure but also do not wish for my cure. Just prepare this medicine; even if injured, I bear no resentment." Hearing this, the Emperor allowed Sun Simiao to test the medicine on himself. After more than ten days, she improved by 80%; after twenty days, she was fully cured. The ophthalmologists were demoted two ranks, and Sun Simiao was rewarded with 300,000 coins.
[Yin Hai Jing Wei] Stop Tears Formula:
Ingredients: Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, soaked in rice water, 1.5 liang), Mu Zei (Equisetum Rami, nodes removed, 2 liang), Xiang Fu Zi (Cyperus Rhizome, stir-fried, hairs removed).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Make pills with refined honey paste, size of paulownia seeds. Take 3 pills after meals with salt water.
Classic Statement: The Classics say: "Wind Qi enters the stomach with the Yangming channel, travels up along the vessel to the inner canthus of the eye, causing cold accumulation and tearing." This is tearing caused by Wind-Cold.
[Wang Haogu (He)] Dang Gui Tang (Angelica Decoction): Treats injury by Wind pathogen, Cold accumulating in the eyes, spontaneous tearing, emaciation, and continuous sweating.
Ingredients: Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (each 3 liang), Guan Gui (Cinnamon Twig, 1 liang), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, processed), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root) (each half liang), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel, 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Add one bowl of water, three slices of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), and two dates. Decoct to 80% volume, strain, and take hot. Take at any time, total three doses.

Preparation and Administration: Take 4 qian per dose. Add one bowl of water, four slices of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), and five leaves of Bo He (Mint). Decoct to 70% volume, strain, and take warm.
[Ling Shu] Among the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, the Heart is the master, the Ears are the listeners, the Eyes are the viewers, the Lungs are the ministers, the Liver provides glory/nourishment, the Spleen provides defense, and the Kidneys govern the exterior.
Therefore, the fluids of all Five Zang and Six Fu organs seep upwards into the eyes. If the Heart is sad and Qi merges, the Heart Tie (Heart Connection) becomes tense. When the Heart Tie is tense, the Lung rises. When the Lung rises, fluids overflow upwards. Since the Heart Tie and Lung cannot remain constantly raised, they fluctuate up and down, causing coughing and tearing.
[Zhu Danxi] Women suffering from eye discharge and loss of appetite.
Formula: Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit). Divide into six portions, decoct, and take hot before meals. Additionally, moxa the Hegu acupoint.
[Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang] Treatment for continuous tearing: Use Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) steeped thickly. Dip dry cotton wool and wipe the eyes.
[Shan Tian Fang] Wind Tear Eye: Nine-section Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) and Sophora Bark Ash coarse powder. Boil in water, clarify, and wash frequently.
[Li Geng (Yuan)] Shen Xiao Ming Mu Tang (Divine Effect Bright Eye Decoction) and Lian Qiao Yin Zi (Forsythia Drink): Treat continuous tearing. (Both formulas also treat Wind-induced inverted eyelashes and curled lashes.)
Pathogenic Mechanism: Tearing is always due to Wind-Heat. The Classics state: "When Jueyin governs the Heaven's policy, in the third Qi period, the Heaven's policy spreads, Wind arises timely, and the people suffer from tearing."
[Ji Cheng) Wind-facing Cold Tears, excessive discharge and black spots:
Acupoints: Da Gu Kong, Xiao Gu Kong (Moxibustion as above method, extinguish fire). Er Jian (Insert 1 fen, insert obliquely backwards 5 fen, moxibustion). He Gu (Acupuncture and Moxibustion).
