(Referring to the discharge of turbid mucus from the nose)
When heat from the Gallbladder channel transfers to the brain, it causes a pungent sensation and Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis). Bi Yuan is characterized by the continuous discharge of turbid nasal mucus; if transmitted further, it may develop into Bi Xu (Epistaxis/Nosebleed) and Ming Mu (Blurred Vision/Dimness of eyes). (The full text can be found in the chapter on Transmission and Variation of Diseases; furthermore, the *Mai Jie Jing Wei Lun* states: "Tears and nasal discharge originate from the brain, therefore brain fluid seeping out becomes nasal discharge.")
[Luo Tianyi] Regarding various diseases of the nose: When heat from the Gallbladder channel transfers to the brain, it causes a pungent sensation and Bi Yuan, with continuous discharge of turbid mucus. If it flows endlessly like a spring and cannot be contained, failing to heal over time, it will inevitably become a disease of Epistaxis (Nosebleed), which should be treated with Fang Feng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction).
Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome, 1 liang 5 qian) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) Gan Cao (Licorice Radix, honey-fried) Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, de-core, each 1 liang)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with boiling water, taken after meals, three times daily.

Once treated a middle-aged man who had turbid mucus flowing from his right nostril with a foul odor. His pulse was wiry and small; the right Cun position was slippery, and the left Cun position was choppy. First, moxa was applied to Shang Xing (GV23), Zu San Li (ST36), and He Gu (LI4). Then, a prescription consisting of Jiu Qin (2 liang), Cang Zhu and Ban Xia (each 1 liang), Xin Yi, Xi Xin, Chuan Xiong, Bai Zhi, Shi Gao, Ren Shen, and Ge Gen (each half liang) was divided into seven doses for administration. The patient recovered completely. This was a disease caused by damp-heat and phlegm accumulation.
[Zhang Zhongjing] Those with cold in the Lungs will spit out turbid mucus.
[Anonymous] Cang Er San (Xanthium Powder), treating continuous discharge of turbid nasal mucus, named Bi Yuan.
