For phlegm-asthma caused by external contraction, if the condition is not fully cured after taking Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), or if it recurs after recovery, continue with this decoction.
Long Gu (Fossilized Bones, 1 liang, not crushed) Mu Li (Oyster Shell, 1 liang, not crushed) Sheng Hang Shao (Raw Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian) Qing Ban Xia (Clear Pinelliae Tuber, 4 qian) Su Zi (Perilla Seed, 4 qian, stir-fried and crushed)
Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, 3 qian, stir-fried and crushed)
If heat signs are present, add Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) in a酌量 dose ranging from several qian to 1 liang.
In my past treatments of phlegm-asthma due to external contraction, I followed the modification principles of Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) from *Shang Han Lun* (Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases), removing Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) and adding Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum). For cases with heat, I further added Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), achieving immediate results without exception.
However, occasionally there are cases where the patient recovers but relapses, and re-administering the original formula proves ineffective. Since devising this decoction, for such conditions, when Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) cures the illness in one dose, following up with one dose of Cong Long Tang (Dragon-Following Decoction) ensures no recurrence. For those not fully cured, one or two doses of Cong Long Tang (Dragon-Following Decoction) will inevitably lead to complete recovery. It is named Cong Long Tang (Dragon-Following Decoction) because it is most suitable for use after Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction).
Some may doubt that the heavy use of Long Gu (Fossilized Bones) and Mu Li (Oyster Shell) in the formula is overly astringent. Treating external contraction syndromes, even in the aftermath of releasing the exterior, there is still concern that residual pathogens might be sealed inside by these astringent herbs. Although wheezing may be temporarily suppressed, the root cause of the disease could deepen, leading to unexpected complications later. The answer is: To view Long Gu (Fossilized Bones) and Mu Li (Oyster Shell) in this manner is to underestimate them superficially. This can be verified by citing the words of former sages.
Xu Lingtai said: "Long Gu (Fossilized Bones) is very sticky and astringent; it can consolidate righteous Qi. It can cure diseases involving dissipation of heart-mind spirit and sliding/descending of the intestines and stomach. This herb only consolidates righteous Qi and does not consolidate pathogenic Qi. Therefore, Zhang Zhongjing often used it together with Mu Li (Oyster Shell) when treating Shang Han (Cold Damage) where pathogenic Qi had not yet exhausted, as seen in formulas like Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Bupleurum Plus Fossilized Bones and Oyster Shell Decoction) and Gui Zhi Gan Cao Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Licorice Plus Fossilized Bones and Oyster Shell Decoction)." In my treatment of Shang Han (Cold Damage) and Wen Bing (Warm Diseases), presenting with heat excess, deficient pulse, palpitations (Zheng Tong), and mental agitation, I frequently combine Long Gu (Fossilized Bones) with Yu Rou (Corni Fructus) and Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), achieving immediate efficacy.
My disciple Gao XX once treated a case of phlegm-asthma due to external contraction. The wheezing was severe, and the pulse was deficient. Physicians all declined to treat it as incurable. Gao XX administered Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), removing Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), adding Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and further adding 1 liang of Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) and 5 qian of Ye Tai Shen (Wild Taizhen Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma). After one dose, the wheezing subsided. Fearing recurrence, he then administered Cong Long Tang (Dragon-Following Decoction), also adding Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum). The patient recovered abruptly and completely.
Another case: Zi XX treated an elderly man surnamed Qu, over sixty years old, suffering from phlegm-asthma due to external contraction, unable to lie down for more than ten days. Physicians administered two doses of Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), causing the condition to worsen (for those whose pulses show heat but dare not add much Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), their condition will inevitably worsen). XX examined the patient: the pulse beat six times per breath, there was irritability in the upper jiao, the tongue was covered with white coating, and bowel movements occurred two to three times daily, though not loose stools. Assessing the syndrome and pulse, it seemed difficult to salvage. Yet XX still administered Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), removing Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), adding Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), along with 3 qian of Ye Tai Shen (Wild Taizhen Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), 5 qian each of Sheng Long Gu (Raw Fossilized Bones) and Sheng Mu Li (Raw Oyster Shell), and 1.5 liang of Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum). After one dose, the condition improved significantly; after another dose, full recovery was achieved.
Note: The previous case only added Qi-tonifying herbs to Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), while the latter case added Qi-consolidating herbs to Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction). This may seem rash for a young practitioner, yet both managed to salvage critical conditions. This offers a flexible method for using Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction).
Mr. Zheng XX, about fifty years old, from our county. Contracted wind-cold, suffering from severe phlegm-asthma. Treatments involving exterior-releasing, heat-clearing, and phlegm-resolving herbs were ineffective. The condition lingered for over twenty days, gradually approaching a critical state.
His nephew Liu XX studied under me and discussed medical knowledge, retaining much of it. Hearing of his uncle's critical illness, he went to visit. Upon arrival,
clothes and hats were already prepared for the funeral rites. Liu XX used Ting Li Da Zao Tang (Descurainiae Semen et Jujubae Decoction), composed of Ting Li (Descurainiae Semen, 4 qian, raw, wrapped in cloth) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 5 pieces, torn open), adding Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 2 qian). He decocted it and administered it orally. The patient suddenly awakened. Following this, one dose of Cong Long Tang (Dragon-Following Decoction) led to complete recovery. This syndrome involved stubborn phlegm obstructing the orifices and collaterals of the lungs; only Ting Li Da Zao Tang (Descurainiae Semen et Jujubae Decoction) could drain it. Moreover, prolonged wheezing inevitably depletes Yuan Qi (Primary Qi); adding 2 qian of Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) helps consolidate Yuan Qi (Primary Qi), and it can also utilize the descending power of Ting Li (Descurainiae Semen) to guide Qi back to the Kidneys. Thus, it can be seen that my devised Cong Long Tang (Dragon-Following Decoction), although suitable for use after Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), can also be used酌情 (discretionarily) for those who have taken exterior-releasing herbs, adapting to temporary circumstances. It need not always follow Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction).
