Treats Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency (Spleen-Stomach Qi Deficiency), where the inability to transform and transport dietary food leads to the generation of Phlegm.
Raw Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu, 白术) (2 liang) Raw Gallus Gallus Giger Endothelium Corneum (Ji Nei Jin, 鸡内金) (2 liang, thoroughly cleaned of gravel and debris)
The above two herbs are separately ground into fine powder and sieved, then separately roasted over slow fire (do not over-roast). Form pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 3 qian per dose, swallowed with boiled water. Bai Zhu is the principal herb for strengthening and tonifying the Spleen and Stomach; however, its Earth nature tends to cause stagnation, so excessive or prolonged use of Bai Zhu may also lead to stagnation. With Ji Nei Jin assisting by resolving blood stasis and accumulation, tonification and unblocking are employed simultaneously. This ensures that the Qi transformation in the Middle Jiao becomes robust and flowing, fluids are distributed throughout, clear Yang ascends and turbid Yin descends, thereby eliminating the root of Phlegm. Furthermore, this formula is not only highly effective for treating Phlegm, but for those with poor appetite, it invariably increases food intake. Moreover, long-term use can dissolve all accumulations in the abdomen.
When first drafting this formula, it was originally intended to be made into pills using water. However, some long-term users experienced dry throat and dry, constipated stools. Later, honey pills were adopted, and this drawback disappeared.
Treats elderly patients with Qi deficiency who cannot move Phlegm, leading to Phlegm-Qi stagnation, chest fullness and oppression, and pain in the hypochondrium. It is effective for anyone with Qi deficiency and abundant Phlegm, and also treats Hernia (Shan Qi, 疝气).
Raw Euryales Semen (Qian Shi, 芡实) (6 liang) Raw Gallus Gallus Giger Endothelium Corneum (Ji Nei Jin, 鸡内金) (3 liang) Wheat Flour (Bai Mian, 白面) (0.5 jin) White Rock Sugar (Baisha Tang, 白沙糖) (as needed)
First, wash the Qian Shi in water to remove the floating skin, sun-dry, grind into powder, and sieve. Then, grind the Ji Nei Jin (ensuring any gravel/debris is removed so the weight remains accurate), sieve it, place it in a basin, and soak in boiling water for about half a day. Next, add the Qian Shi, white sugar, and wheat flour. Use the original soaking water to mix into very thin small cakes, pan-fried until scorched yellow, and eat as desired.
Ji Nei Jin supplements the Spleen and Stomach, greatly aiding the transformation and transportation of food, and dissolving accumulations. Once food is digested and accumulations resolved, Phlegm and saliva are naturally eliminated. Furthermore, abundant Phlegm and saliva in the elderly are often due to deficiency and exhaustion of the Lower Jiao, where Qi transformation fails to secure and hold, causing Phlegm to rise with Chong Qi (Penetrating Vessel Qi). Qian Shi strongly consolidates Chong Qi and secures Zheng Qi, regulating the Qi transformation of the Lower Jiao. When used together with wheat flour, one tonifies the Heart and the other tonifies the Kidney, allowing Heart and Kidney to interact, harmonizing Fire and Water, thus calming Phlegm-Qi.
Question: Since the Phlegm in the elderly is due to Qi deficiency failing to move it, why not add herbs that tonify Qi? Answer: Any Qi-tonifying herbs, if taken for a long time, may cause other drawbacks. The ingredients in this formula consist of two grain foods and one meat product, sweetened with sugar, making it suitable for ordinary dietary consumption, distinct from medicinal decoctions. Moreover, eating it increases food intake, which naturally strengthens those with Qi deficiency.
If Qian Shi is removed from this formula, it can treat Infantile Malnutrition (Gan Ji, 疳积) and abdominal distension in children, and Masses (Jia Ji Ju, 瘕积聚) in adults.
