Treats cold invading the meridians, causing spasms in the four limbs; this syndrome is common in women.
Sheng Huangqi (Raw Radix Astragali, 5 qian) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 4 qian) Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, 4 qian) Guizhi Jian (Tip of Ramulus Cinnamomi, 2 qian) Sheng Baishao (Raw Radix Paeoniae Alba, 3 qian) Sheng Ming Ruxiang (Raw Resina Draconis, 4 qian) Sheng Ming Moyao (Raw Resina Commiphorae, 4 qian) Shengjiang (Fresh Rhizoma Zingiberis, 3 qian)
If the cold pathogen is severe, add Ganjiang (Dried Rhizoma Zingiberis), 3 qian.
The pathology lies in cold invading the meridians, not the zang-fu organs. The meridians mostly run between the muscles; therefore, Huangqi (Radix Astragali) is used as the sovereign drug for its ability to warm and tonify the muscles, so that when the physical form becomes robust and vigorous, it can naturally overcome the pathogenic factors.
Furthermore, drugs that warm and unblock the meridians are added as assistants. Not only can they dispel cold, but also disperse wind; this is what is meant by "when the blood flows freely, the wind departs on its own." Once the wind-cold has been expelled and the blood vessels become active and smooth, how could the spasms fail to cease?
Treats leg pain and arm pain caused by qi deficiency. Also treats lower back pain.
Sheng Huangqi (Raw Radix Astragali, 6 qian) Yetaishen (Wild Radix Panacis Quinquefolii, 3 qian) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 qian) Cun Maidong (Stem Bulbus Ophiopogonis, 3 qian, with heart) Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 3 qian) Sheng Ming Ruxiang (Raw Resina Draconis, 3 qian) Sheng Ming Moyao (Raw Resina Commiphorae, 3 qian) Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae, 1 qian) Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii, 1 qian)
For this formula, reduce the dosage of Maidong (Bulbus Ophiopogonis) and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) by one-third. Combine several doses into one, grind into fine powder, and make pills with refined honey. This is named Jianyun Wan (Jianyun Pill), which treats the same syndromes as mentioned above.
Historically, treatments for leg pain and arm pain have mostly blamed wind-cold-dampness bi-syndrome, or blood stasis, qi stagnation, and phlegm-fluid retention. They do not realize that if the body's qi transformation function is robust, vigorous, and circulating throughout the body, then conditions of bi-obstruction, stasis, and stagnation throughout the body will heal spontaneously without treatment. Even if they occasionally do not heal spontaneously, treatment will be easy to achieve success. From my clinical experience, I know that people whose primordial qi is inherently strong rarely suffer from this disease.
Therefore, whenever encountering persistent leg pain or arm pain that does not respond to long-term regulation and treatment, tonifying the primordial qi to promote circulation can yield immediate results even for chronic ailments lasting several years.
Treats leg pain and lower back pain accompanied by decreased appetite.
Chao Baizhu (Fried Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 6 qian) Danggui Shen (Body of Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 2 qian) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 2 qian) Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, 1.5 qian) Sheng Ming Ruxiang (Raw Resina Draconis, 1.5 qian) Sheng Ming Moyao (Raw Resina Commiphorae, 1.5 qian)
This formula heavily uses Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) to strengthen and tonify the spleen and stomach. When the spleen and stomach are healthy, qi transformation can naturally spread laterally to the rest of the body. Moreover, Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) is indicated for wind-cold-dampness bi-syndrome, as explicitly stated in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica). Assisted by drugs that unblock and activate qi and blood, not only is the wind-cold-dampness bi-syndrome resolved, but pain caused by qi and blood obstruction is also naturally relieved.
A young unmarried woman suffered from leg pain so severe she could barely walk. She was cured using my formulated Jianyun Tang (Jianyun Decoction). The following year, the old illness recurred, accompanied by lower back pain. Taking the previous formula again was ineffective. Upon examining her pulse, the right guan position was very soggy and weak. Inquiring about her diet revealed decreased intake. Thus, I prepared this decoction for her. After a few doses, her food intake increased. After twenty doses, both her lower back pain and leg pain were completely cured.
An elderly woman, nearly seventy years old, suddenly developed leg pain, unable to move. At night, the pain prevented sleep. Her family invited me to treat her, stating that her pulse seemed forceful and suggesting the pain was due to constrained fire.
However, upon examining her pulse, it was large and wiry. Asking her, she reported no sensation of heat in her heart. I said: This pulse is not indicative of fire. The largeness is due to excessive deficiency of the spleen and stomach, causing true qi to leak outward. The wiriness is due to disharmony between the liver and gallbladder, where wood qi is excessive and overacts on earth. Treat with Zhenzhong Tang (Zhenzhong Decoction), adding Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), and Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni, seeds removed) each in amounts of several qian. Tonify the deficiency of the spleen and stomach, thereby suppressing the excess of the liver and gallbladder. After a few doses, she recovered.
