Treatment for consumptive disease (Xu Lao) with blood in the sputum.
Fresh Rhizoma Imperatae (Mao Gen, 4 liang, chopped), Fresh Lotus Rhizome (Ou, 4 liang, sliced).
Boil to extract juice and drink frequently; it will heal itself within ten days. If the stool is loose, reduce the amount of Mao Gen by half. Then take about 1 liang of fine powder from raw Dioscorea Rhizome (Shan Yao), mix it into the medicinal juice, boil as a tea soup, and take orally.
Rhizoma Imperatae excels at clearing deficiency heat without damaging the Spleen and Stomach, while Lotus Rhizome excels at resolving blood stasis and simultaneously nourishing new blood. Their combination is an excellent product for nurturing true Yin. Moreover, both have hollow structures and can promote water metabolism. Since blood also belongs to the category of water, they can guide the overflowing and rebellious blood to descend slowly, stabilizing its position.
Regarding the use of Lotus Rhizome for treating blood disorders: if the purpose is to resolve blood stasis, red lotus root is superior. If the purpose is to stop hematemesis and epistaxis, white lotus root is better than red lotus root.
My cousin ××, aged fifty, suffered from hematemesis. Medical treatment was ineffective. The pulse was slippery and rapid, trembling with a dynamic quality, and felt empty upon deep pressure. At that time, I was young and dared not prescribe lightly. Therefore, I proposed this simple prescription: decoct two large bowls of soup, drink it slowly as warm tea. Improvement was seen on the same day, and after five or six days, the illness completely resolved. He stated that before drinking this soup, his heart felt suspended and unanchored; after drinking it, he felt the medicinal power reaching the area, as if his hand were pressing his heart to restore its proper position. This is why it healed him.
For the same condition as above, accompanied by deficiency heat.
Add two liang of fresh Radix Cirsii Japonici (Xiao Ji Gen) to the previous formula.
Both Radix Cirsii Japonici (Da Ji) and Radix Cirsii Japonici (Xiao Ji) can clear heat in the Blood level to stop reckless bleeding due to heat, with Xiao Ji being particularly effective. For any condition caused by reckless bleeding due to blood-heat, using several liang of fresh Radix Cirsii Japonici (Xiao Ji Gen) decocted in soup, or extracting its natural juice and taking it with boiled water, yields swift results. It is indeed a good medicine.
When insects infest the stems of Xiao Ji, galls form resembling small dates. If ten or more fresh galls are taken, pounded into a paste, and taken with boiled water, it is very effective for treating hematemesis and epistaxis caused by heat. Li ×× from the neighboring village once told me: "In my youth, I suffered from hematemesis. Multiple medications were ineffective. Later, I obtained this simple prescription using Xiao Ji galls. One dose cured me. Hence, I call it 'Cooling Ruyi Pearl'; it is truly an excellent item among medicines."
