[General Rhyme] Carbuncles and sores should be treated early without delay; when cold and heat pathogens steam each other, the time for onset has arrived. In the initial stage, methods of dissipation should be urgently applied; if pus has formed, expelling toxins is appropriate.
When a sore or carbuncle first appears, presenting with redness, swelling, and extreme pain and itching, it is caused by the knotting of wind, fire, and blood. It is suitable to use Sanxiao Cheyong Powder (Dissipation and Carbuncle-Removing Powder).
Angelicae Sinensis Radix Rubra (Guizhi) [Note: Text says Guizui, usually refers to Dangguiwei], Safflower (Honghua), Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua), Red Peony Root (Chishao), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Apricot Seed (Xingren), Licorice Root (Gancao), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Perilla Leaf (Zisu), Trichosanthes Root (Huafen), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Frankincense (Ruxiang), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Stephania Stem (Fangji).
The rhyme states: For sores and carbuncles in the initial stage with pain and redness, Angelica, Peony, Honeysuckle, Coptis, Apricot seed, and Licorice attack.
Perilla, Schizonepeta, Safflower, Forsythia, Phellodendrum, Scutellaria, Stephania, Trichosanthes root, and Frankincense unblock.
(Bo An's Note: Whenever poison/toxin first arises and one wishes to prevent it from enlarging, use Ash of Arion (Yanyouhui) and Raw Rheum Rhizome (Sheng Dahuang), each 4 liang; Chinese Gall (Wubeizi) and Bletilla Tuber (Baiji), each 2 liang; Raw Pinellia Tuber (Sheng Banxia) and White Akebia Tuber (Bailian), each 2 liang; Carbonized Grass (Baicaoshuang), Alum Red (Fan Hong), Raw Arisaema Tuber (Sheng Nanxing), Chen Xiaofen, and Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateral Root Preparata (Caowu), each 1 liang; Bear Bile (Xiongdan), 1 qian. Grind all into powder, melt Guang Jiao (Colla Corii Asini), mix with juice squeezed from Hibiscus Mutabilis Leaf (Furongye), blend and pound into pellets. Grind with vinegar and apply around the affected area; this is effective.)
When a carbuncle or sore first appears, presenting with white coloration, depression, and no pain or itching, it is due to Qi stagnation and accumulation of cold phlegm. It is suitable to use Xuanyang Chejü Decoction (Yang-Releasing and Sore-Removing Decoction).
Ephedra Herb (Mahuang), Frankincense (Ruxiang), Myrrh (Moyao), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Jujube Date (Dazao), Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Cardamom Shell (Kaoke), Roasted Ginger (Weijiang), Licorice Root (Gancao).
The rhyme states: When sores and carbuncles are white, Yang must be promoted; Myrrh, Ephedra, and Frankincense are used.
Polygala and Astragalus together with Cardamom and Licorice, plus Jujube, Cinnamon Twig, and Ginger.
For any sore in its initial stage, regardless of whether it presents as red or white, cold or hot, blood-breaking and Qi-moving methods should be employed. It is suitable to externally apply Baixiao San (Hundred-Efficacy Powder).
Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi), Asarum Root (Xixin), Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateral Root (Chuanwu), Arisaema Tuber (Nanxing), Aconitum Kusnezoffii Root (Caowu), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Turmeric Rhizome (Jianghuang), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Rheum Palmatum Rhizome (Dahuang), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), Realgar (Xionghuang), Grainworm (Wuguchong), Alum (Baifan), Bletilla Tuber (Baiji).
Grind all into fine powder, mix with vinegar and wine, steam until hot, and apply thickly to dissipate. If the sore has formed pus, leave the apex to penetrate.
The rhyme states: When Qi and Blood congeal, the sore begins to form; Chuanwu, Caowu, Xixin, Baizhi accompany Nanxing.
Rheum, Coptis, Realgar, Phellodendrum, and Turmeric enter; Gardenia, Bletilla, Grainworm, and Alum are excellently applied.
Whenever a sore has formed pus and one desires rapid suppuration and ulceration, pus-expelling and interior-supporting methods should be used. It is suitable to use Huangqi Tuoli Decoction (Astragalus Interior-Supporting Decoction).
Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Gleditsia Sinensis Thorn (Zaoci), Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua), Trichosanthes Root (Huafen), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), Jujube Date (Dazao), Pangolin Scale (Shanjia), Licorice Root (Gancao).

Honeysuckle, Gleditsia thorn, and Pangolin scale together with Ginger and Jujube; Trichosanthes root and Licorice tip boil into thick juice.
Whenever a sore has ulcerated and pus/rot cannot be removed quickly, rot-dissolving and toxin-expelling methods should be employed. It is suitable to use Xiaoning Huanji Dan (Rot-Dissolving Muscle-Restoring Pill).
Croton Seed (Badou), Realgar (Xionghuang). Grind into powder, stir-fry until black, grind finely, insert into the sore hole to dissolve rot and extract pus. Then, stir-fried Frankincense and Myrrh, with a small amount of Musk ground into powder, are used to extract pus and generate muscle. Adding Pearl Powder is even better; externally apply Wanying Ointment.
The rhyme states: When sore pus has ulcerated and rot is hard to eliminate, Badou and Xionghuang have the greatest power.
Frankincense, Myrrh, Pearl, and Musk are ground together; generating muscle relies specifically on these two formulas.
After a sore, if Yang deficiency manifests with poor appetite, cold body, and loose stools, it indicates insufficient Wei Qi. It is suitable to use Shiquan Dabu Decoction (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction).
Poria (Fuling), Licorice Root (Gancao), Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Ginseng Root (Renshen), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong), White Peony Root (Baishao), Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Cassia Twig (Angui), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), Jujube Date (Dazao).
The rhyme states: After a sore, Yang deficiency and Qi insufficiency require Ginseng, Poria, Licorice, and Atractylodes together.
Angelica, Ligusticum, Atractylodes, and White Peony harmonize with Cassia; great tonification still relies on the merit of Ginger and Jujube.
After a sore, if Yin deficiency manifests with irritability, thirst, yellow urine, and fever, it indicates that Ying Blood fails to nourish. It is suitable to use Siwu Yangying Decoction (Four Substances Nourishing Camp Decoction).

Rehmannia, Poria, Codonopsis, White Peony, Honeysuckle, Forsythia, Bamboo shavings; Yuzhu, Licorice, Ophiopogon, and Apricot seeds are good.
