[General Principle] For pediatric external disorders, one should seek the Taiyang channel; the clear instructions in the "Three-Character Formula" manifest this principle. Fundamentally, the treatment methods are the same as those for adults, and there is no need to establish a separate department to display specialized expertise.
When a child presents with fever accompanied by aversion to cold and headache, it is a Taiyang channel injury from Cold (Taiyang Shanghan). Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Decoction to Overcome Toxicity) is appropriate.
Ren Shen (Panax ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (2 qian), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) (2 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (2 qian), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix) (3 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (1 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) (3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (2 qian), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) (2 pieces), Cong Bai (Allii Cepae Bulbus) (1 piece), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3 slices).
The verse states: Pediatric fever due to Cold, use Bai Du San with Ren Shen, Du Huo, and Qiang Huo.
Further add Chai Hu, Qian Hu, Chuan Xiong, Zhi Ke, Jie Geng, along with Fu Ling, Cong Bai, Gan Cao, Da Zao, Ge Gen, and Sheng Jiang.
(Ber An's Note: Using Dan Dou Chi (Sojae Seminis Preparatum) 3 qian and Cong Bai 5 segments, decocted and taken orally, is also effective.)
When a child presents with trismus (lockjaw), convulsions of the hands and feet, and phlegm rattle, it is wind-stroke stirring up phlegm-fire. Qiang Huo Xi Feng Tang (Notopterygium Wind-Extinguishing Decoction) is appropriate.
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (1 qian), Zhu Li (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia Succus) (2 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (2 qian), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Cum Bile) (1.5 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (3 qian), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (1 qian), Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus) (3 qian), Jiang Zhi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Succus) (5 drops), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) (1.5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (8 fen), Ku Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (1.5 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (1.5 qian), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) (2 fen), Ling Yang Jiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu) (3 fen).
The verse states: Trismus and phlegm rattle in children, Ban Xia, Zhu Li, Qiang Huo, Nan Xing, and Fang Feng eliminate wind-fire.
Ku Qin, Sheng Di, Jiang Can, Tian Ma, Jiang Zhi, Zhi Ke, and Gan Cao together, with Ling Yang Jiao, Fang Feng, and Xi Jiao, exert particularly strong power.
[General Principle] For pediatric internal disorders, one should seek the Taiyin channel; Mr. Xiuyuan has words of special admonition. The collected text lists no other syndromes; other syndromes should all be sought here. In newborns, continuous crying with flexed waist indicates blood stasis accumulated in the abdomen. Xia Yu Tang (Downward Expelling Blood Stasis Decoction) is appropriate.
Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) (3 qian), Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces) (3 qian), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (1 qian), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (1 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (2 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (1.5 qian).
The verse states: Newborns crying incessantly, flexed waist indicates blood stasis remaining.
Ling Zhi, Tao Ren, Dan Pi, and Zhi Ke together, with Mu Xiang and Hou Po, constitute one prescription.
Abdominal pain in children, along with abdominal distension, vomiting, and diarrhea, is generally attributed to Taiyin channel pathology. Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang (Costus and Amomum Six Gentlemen Decoction) is appropriate.
Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (1 qian), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) (2 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian), Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) (3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (2 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3 slices), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) (2 pieces).
The verse states: Pediatric vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, medication should still include Costus and Amomum.
Fu Ling, Gan Cao, Dang Shen, Gan Cao, Chen Pi, and Ban Xia work together; fortifying spleen and regulating qi yields praiseworthy efficacy.
Food stagnation in children, presenting with heat in the hands and feet and abdominal pain, results from impaired spleen and stomach transportation and transformation. Jia Jian Ping Wei San (Modified Flat Stomach Powder) is appropriate.
Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (1 qian), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (8 fen), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1.5 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (3 qian), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) (3 qian), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) (2 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (3 fen), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (2 slices), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (2 qian).
The verse states: Abdominal pain indicates food stagnation in children; Cang Zhu, Sheng Jiang, Shan Zha, and Hou Po are highly effective.
Cang Zhu, Chen Pi, Mai Ya, Shen Qu, and Bai Shao combined harmonize the spleen and stomach, bringing peace to the disease.
(Ber An's Note: Thoroughly roasted scorched rice, ground fine with Sha Ren, is a wonderful product for digesting food.)
Yellowish, emaciated complexion in children, along with abdominal enlargement and tidal fever, indicates Gan disease (malnutrition syndrome) of the spleen and stomach. Yi Gan Hu Lian Tang (Eliminate Gan Hu Lian Decoction) is appropriate.
Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (1.5 qian), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) (1.5 qian), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) (3 qian), Wu Yi (Euodiae Fructus) (1.5 qian), Hu Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma var. chinense or specific preparation) (2 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (1.5 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (2 slices), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Fu Pi (Tangerine Peel/Abdominal wall herb context implies Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium or similar, here translated as Fu Pi) (1 qian), Yin Chai Hu (Stellariae Radix) (2 qian).
The verse states: Pediatric Gan disease with emaciation and yellowish hue, Shan Zha, Mai Ya, Wu Yi, Zhi Ke, and Gan Cao require careful consideration.
Fu Pi, Hu Huang Lian, Yin Chai Hu, and Bai Shao together; regulating the spleen still requires Sheng Jiang.
