Chart of Medication Methods for Five Manifestations of Liver-Gallbladder (Wood) Pathologies
The Foot-Jueyin Liver and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder meridians belong to Wood. The methods for treating their primary pathologies and five resulting manifestations are as follows:
When the Liver and Gallbladder suffer from self-originated disease, it is termed "Proper Evil" (Zheng Xie). Use Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to drain the Wood within Wood (i.e., soothe the Liver and resolve stagnation).
When the pathology transmits to the Heart, it is termed "Excess Evil" (Shi Xie). Use Qiwei Yin (Seven-Ingredient Decoction) to drain the Fire within Wood (i.e., clear Heart Fire).
When the pathology transmits to the Spleen, it is termed "Minor Evil" (Wei Xie). Use Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) to drain the Earth within Wood (i.e., harmonize the Spleen and Stomach).
When the pathology transmits to the Lung, it is termed "Robbing Evil" (Ze Xie). Use Zuojin Wan (Left Metal Pill) to drain the Metal within Wood (i.e., clear Lung heat or pacify Liver fire invading the Lung).
When the pathology transmits to the Kidney, it is termed "Deficiency Evil" (Xu Xie). Use Zishen Shenggan Yin (Nourish Kidney and Generate Liver Decoction) to drain the Water within Wood (i.e., nourish Water to submerge Wood).

The Hand-Shaoyin Heart and Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine meridians belong to Fire. The methods for treating their primary pathologies and five resulting manifestations are as follows:
When the Heart and Small Intestine suffer from self-originated disease, it is termed "Proper Evil" (Zheng Xie). Use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) to drain the Fire within Fire (i.e., tonify Heart and Spleen fire/spirit).
When the pathology transmits to the Spleen, it is termed "Excess Evil" (Shi Xie). Use Yuanzhi Yinzi (Polygala Decoction) to drain the Earth within Fire (i.e., strengthen Spleen, transform phlegm, and open orifices).
When the pathology transmits to the Lung, it is termed "Minor Evil" (Wei Xie). Use Longgu Wan (Dragon Bone Pill) to drain the Metal within Fire (i.e., calm spirit and astringe Lung qi).
When the pathology transmits to the Kidney, it is termed "Robbing Evil" (Ze Xie). Use Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder) to drain the Water within Fire (i.e., clear Heart heat and promote urination to guide heat downward).
When the pathology transmits to the Liver, it is termed "Deficiency Evil" (Xu Xie). Use Yangrong Tang (Nourish Nutritive Decoction) to drain the Wood within Fire (i.e., nourish blood and soften the Liver).

The Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians belong to Earth. The methods for treating their primary pathologies and five resulting manifestations are as follows:
When the Spleen and Stomach suffer from self-originated disease, it is termed "Proper Evil" (Zheng Xie). Use Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) to drain the Earth within Earth (i.e., strengthen Spleen, boost Qi, and dry dampness).
When the pathology transmits to the Lung, it is termed "Excess Evil" (Shi Xie). Use Si Junzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) to drain the Metal within Earth (i.e., fortify Earth to generate Metal).
When the pathology transmits to the Kidney, it is termed "Minor Evil" (Wei Xie). Use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) to drain the Water within Earth (i.e., warm the Middle and strengthen Spleen to control Water).
When the pathology transmits to the Liver, it is termed "Robbing Evil" (Ze Xie). Use Jianzhong Tang (Establish the Middle Decoction) to drain the Wood within Earth (i.e., relieve urgency and pain / harmonize Liver and Spleen).
When the pathology transmits to the Heart, it is termed "Deficiency Evil" (Xu Xie). Use Xianglian Wan (Coptis and Aucklandia Pill) to drain the Fire within Earth (i.e., clear heat and dry dampness / regulate intestines and stomach to calm the Spirit).

The Hand-Taiyin Lung and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridians belong to Metal. The methods for treating their primary pathologies and five resulting manifestations are as follows:
When the Lung and Large Intestine suffer from self-originated disease, it is termed "Proper Evil" (Zheng Xie). Use Xiebai San (Drain White Powder) to drain the Metal within Metal (i.e., clear and drain Lung heat).
When the pathology transmits to the Kidney, it is termed "Excess Evil" (Shi Xie). Use Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) to drain the Water within Metal (i.e., boost Qi and nourish Yin / promote Metal-Water generation).
When the pathology transmits to the Liver, it is termed "Minor Evil" (Wei Xie). Use Shengjin Zishui Yin (Generate Metal and Nourish Water Decoction) to drain the Wood within Metal (i.e., moisten Lung and nourish Water to nourish Liver).
When the pathology transmits to the Heart, it is termed "Robbing Evil" (Ze Xie). Use Huang [missing character] Tang (Huang Decoction) to drain the Fire within Metal (i.e., clear Heart Fire).
When the pathology transmits to the Spleen, it is termed "Deficiency Evil" (Xu Xie). Use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Boost Qi Decoction) to drain the Earth within Metal (i.e., tonify Spleen and boost Qi).

The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney and Foot-Taiyang Bladder meridians belong to Water. The methods for treating their primary pathologies and five resulting manifestations are as follows:
When the Kidney and Bladder suffer from self-originated disease, it is termed "Proper Evil" (Zheng Xie). Use Liuwei Yin (Six-Ingredient Decoction, i.e., Liuwei Dihuang Wan) to drain the Water within Water (i.e., nourish Kidney Yin).
When the pathology transmits to the Liver, it is termed "Excess Evil" (Shi Xie). Use Shugan Yishen Tang (Soothe Liver and Benefit Kidney Decoction) to drain the Wood within Water (i.e., nourish Water to submerge Wood / soothe Liver and tonify Kidney).
When the pathology transmits to the Heart, it is termed "Minor Evil" (Wei Xie). Use Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill, i.e., Jin Gui Shenqi Wan) to drain the Fire within Water (i.e., guide Fire back to its source / warm and tonify Kidney Yang).
When the pathology transmits to the Spleen, it is termed "Robbing Evil" (Ze Xie). Use Yougui Yin (Right Restoration Decoction) to drain the Earth within Water (i.e., warm Kidney Yang to warm Spleen Earth).
When the pathology transmits to the Lung, it is termed "Deficiency Evil" (Xu Xie). Use Zuogui Yin (Left Restoration Decoction) to drain the Metal within Water (i.e., nourish Kidney and moisten Lung).
