Urinary obstruction is often caused by the stagnation of fetal heat. Treatment should follow either Daochi San (Carpesium Powder) or Bazheng San (Eight Rectifications Powder). Additionally, an external method using fermented soybean paste applied to the umbilicus can be employed; within a short time, urination will naturally resume.
[Note]
When a newborn infant fails to urinate, it is due to fetal heat flowing downward into the lower jiao. It is appropriate to use Daochi San (Carpesium Powder) to clear heat and promote diuresis; in severe cases, Bazheng San (Eight Rectifications Powder) is the primary formula.
Externally applying Douchi Gao (Fermented Soybean Paste Ointment) to the umbilicus will allow urination to resume spontaneously.
(Daochi San / Carpesium Powder)
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - raw). Decoct with Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) and Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) as guides, using water for decoction. Adding Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huashi (Talcum), and Chifuling (Poria cum Ligno Quercus) yields better results.
(Formula Song)
The efficacy of Daochi San is profound and hard to describe;
It is decocted from Shengdi, Mutong, and Gancao;
Using Junci Medella and Bambusae Folium as guides,
It clears heat and promotes diuresis, making urination flow like a spring.
(Bazheng San / Eight Rectifications Powder)
Bianxu (Polygoni Avicularis Herba), Qumai (Dianthi Herba), Fei Huashi (Talcum - flown), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Chifuling (Poria cum Ligno Quercus), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Sheng Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma - raw), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus - raw). Decoct with Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) as a guide in water.
(Formula Song)
Bazheng San treats urinary obstruction;
Bianxu, Qumai, and Cheqianqi promote diuresis;
Mutong, Huashi, and Chifuling assist,
Combined with Dahuang and Zhizhi to form this prescription.
(Douchi Gao / Fermented Soybean Paste Ointment)
Dan Douchi (Sojae Semens Praeparatum) one spoonful, Tianluo (Cipangari Chalceus) nineteen pieces, Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) one large bundle. Mash the above ingredients thoroughly, mix with Bajiaozhi (Musa Sapientis Cortex Juice), and apply to the umbilicus.

Failure to pass stool is named "Suo Gang" (Locked Anus), all originating from heat-toxins contracted in the womb. Both Zhumi Fa (Cinnabar Honey Method) and Yini Jin (One Pinch Gold) may be used. In emergencies, sucking the five centers and below the umbilicus can restore bowel movement.
[Note]
If a newborn passes stool on the day of birth or the following day, commonly called "passing umbilical stool," this indicates harmonious gastrointestinal qi and moistened Hanyuan (pylorus).
However, if stool is not passed after two or three days, it is termed "Suo Gang" (Locked Anus). This results from contracting acrid-heat toxins in the fetus, leading to qi stagnation and obstruction of transmission.
The infant will necessarily exhibit a red face, abdominal distension, refusal to nurse, and excessive crying. One should first employ the Zhumi Fa (Cinnabar Honey Method).
If ineffective, administer an age-appropriate dose of Yini Jin (One Pinch Gold). Subsequently, have a woman rinse her mouth with warm water,
and suck the anterior chest, posterior back, both hands, both feet, and below the umbilicus—seven areas in total—until the skin turns red. Within a short time, defecation will occur spontaneously.
(Zhumi Fa / Cinnabar Honey Method) See section on Cleaning the Mouth.
(Yini Jin / One Pinch Gold) See section on Refusal to Nurse.
