Why does vomiting and counterflow occur during the eruption of rashes? This is caused by fire pathogen disturbing the stomach, leading to this condition. The treatment should focus on Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings) and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) as main herbs, harmonizing the middle jiao and clearing heat to settle the vomiting.
[Note]
Vomiting in measles patients is due to internal pressure from fire pathogen causing rebellious stomach qi. One must use Zhu Ru Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Shavings and Gypsum Decoction) to harmonize the middle jiao and clear heat, after which the vomiting will cease naturally.
(Zhu Ru Shi Gao Tang)
Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed with ginger), Chi Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, calcined). Add fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang) as a guide, decoct in water and take orally.
(Verse for Prescription)
Zhu Ru Shi Gao Tang treats vomiting, paired with ginger-processed Ban Xia and Fu Ling, Chen Pi, Zhu Ru, and Sheng Gan Cao, combined with calcined Shi Gao.
Toxic heat transferring into the Large Intestine meridian causes abnormal transmission and transformation, resulting in diarrhea. In the early stage, Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang (Ephemerum and Pueraria Decoction) with modifications can be used; if yellowing has already occurred, Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) should be used to clear heat.
[Note]
Diarrhea associated with measles results from toxic heat transferring into the intestines and stomach, disrupting normal transmission and transformation. Practitioners must absolutely avoid using warm or hot formulas.
For diarrhea occurring when the rash first appears, treat with Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang added with Chi Ling (Poria), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma).
For diarrhea occurring after the rash has fully erupted, treat with Huang Lian Jie Du Tang added with Chi Ling (Poria) and Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis).
(Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang) See "Fever Syndrome Treatment" in the Smallpox section.
(Huang Lian Jie Du Tang) See "Crusting and Scab Falling Syndrome Treatment" in the Smallpox section.
Dysentery accompanying measles is the most difficult to manage. This is caused by toxic heat condensing and transferring to the Large Intestine. Symptoms include abdominal pain and dysentery with red and white discharge. All such cases are best treated with Qing Re Dao Zhi Tang (Heat-Clearing and Stagnation-Expelling Decoction).
[Note]
Measles complicated by dysentery is called "Jia Zhen Li" (Measles-Accompanied Dysentery). It is caused by unresolved toxic heat transferring to the Large Intestine.
Symptoms include abdominal pain with an urge to defecate, where the stool may be red, white, or mixed red and white.
All these cases should be treated with Qing Re Dao Zhi Tang. Do not lightly administer astringent agents.
(Qing Re Dao Zhi Tang) Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with ginger), Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried), Tiao Qin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus, heart removed), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried and crushed), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, roasted), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried with Evodiae Fructus).
