Within the formula of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), remove Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), add Fuling (Poria) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) each at three liang, and prepare and administer the remaining ingredients according to the method of Guizhi Tang. The illness will be cured when urination becomes smooth.
[Commentary]
The rationale for removing Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Shaoyao (White Peony Root) is detailed in the "Correction of Errors" section under the previous verse.
[Analysis of the Formula]
It states: "Prepare and administer the remaining ingredients according to the method of Guizhi Tang," which refers to inducing sweating according to the method of Guizhi Tang. It states: "The illness will be cured when urination becomes smooth," meaning that water-fluid retention diseases must be resolved through the urinary pathway. This formula is essentially Lingzhu Gan Tang (Poria, Atractylodes, and Licorice Decoction), but contains Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube). Its primary intent is to release the muscle layer; promoting diuresis is secondary. Therefore, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube) are used to assist Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) in unblocking the fluids to induce sweating. In Linggui Zhugan Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes, and Licorice Decoction), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube) are not used, but the amount of Fuling (Poria) is increased. Its primary intent is to promote diuresis; supporting Yang Qi is secondary. Therefore, Fuling (Poria) is doubled, and Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) is used as the sovereign herb, supporting Yang Qi within the process of promoting diuresis. Hence, the post-formula instructions do not say "according to the method of taking Guizhi Tang."
In Taiyang disease, if emesis or purgation has been performed, leading to fullness and rebellious qi in the epigastrium, qi rushing up to the chest, dizziness upon standing, and a deep, tight pulse; if sweating is then induced, it will disturb the channels, causing the body to tremble and shake. Prolonging Gui Zhi Bai Zhu Fu Ling Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes, and Licorice Decoction) is indicated.
[Annotation]
If Taiyang disease is over-sweated, symptoms such as palpitations in the epigastrium, crossing hands over the heart area, palpitations below the umbilicus, and impending Ben Tun (Rushing Pig) syndrome may occur. Now, due to erroneous emesis or purgation, the chest becomes deficient and pathogenic factors sink inward, resulting in fullness and rebellious qi in the epigastrium with qi rushing up to the chest. If the pulse is floating and tight, indicating the exterior remains unresolved, Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) should be used if there is no sweat, and Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) if there is sweat; one instance of sweating would calm the chest fullness and upward rushing of qi. However, since the pulse is now deep and tight, it indicates that the person inherently suffers from cold fluid retention. If dizziness were absent, using Gou Ti San (Melon Spine Powder) to induce vomiting could also eliminate the condition. Now, because dizziness occurs upon standing, it indicates that the Yang Qi in the chest is already deficient. Not only is emesis contraindicated, but sweating is also contraindicated. If one mistakenly considers the deep, tight pulse as an excess pattern while ignoring the deficiency manifested by dizziness, and erroneously induces sweating, this would unnecessarily disturb the channels and exterior, further depleting the defensive Yang Qi. With the whole body losing its support, trembling and shaking inevitably result. Prolonging Gui Zhi Bai Zhu Fu Ling Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes, and Licorice Decoction) is chosen because it simultaneously eliminates residual pathogens and supports Yang Qi, harmonizing Wei (Defensive) Qi and harmonizing Ying (Nutritive) Qi.
