Treats damp-heat in the Stomach Meridian (Stomach Channel), presenting with swelling and pain of the gums, or pain radiating to the head, or heat sensation on the face.
Ingredients: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Chuanhuanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis). Decoct in water and take orally.
[Collected Annotations] Luo Qianfu stated: The Yangming Stomach is a meridian abundant in both Qi and Blood. Furthermore, as Yangming represents the convergence of two Yang meridians, it is prone to excessive heat. Therefore, when pathogenic factors invade, the resulting diseases often manifest as excess syndromes. If there is severe thirst, coated tongue, and irritability, this indicates injury to the Qi level, with heat accumulating in the Stomach Fu organ and drying up body fluids; Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) should be used. If excessive consumption of strong alcohol, rich fatty foods, and roasted/grilled items leads to damp-heat stagnation in the Stomach Fu organ, reversing into the collaterals and causing these ailments, this indicates injury to the Blood level. The treatment should focus on clearing the Stomach heat. In this formula, Shengdihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) serves as the Sovereign herb to nourish Yin and cool the Blood. It is assisted by Mudanpi (Moutan Bark) to dissipate steaming bone disorder heat and resolve stagnation. Chuanhuanglian (Coptis Rhizome) acts as the Minister herb to clear heat and dry dampness, assisted by Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) to enter the Blood level and guide the medicinal action along the meridians. Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) is still employed for its acrid and cool nature, acting as a guiding agent for this meridian to lead all herbs directly to the site of the Blood. Consequently, symptoms such as throat discomfort, gum swelling, and pain will be thoroughly cleared.
Treats Heart Heat, presenting with oral ulcers (aphthous stomatitis), lingual sores, yellow and red urine, painful urination (dysuria), and difficult, hot strangury (heat-lin).
Ingredients: Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Gancaoshao (Radix Glycyrrhizae with tip). The above three ingredients are decocted in water and taken orally.
[Annotation] The color red corresponds to the Heart. "Daochi" (Guiding Redness) refers to guiding the heat from the Heart Meridian out through the Small Intestine, because the Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interiorly related. However, the observed symptoms of oral ulcers, lingual sores, yellow-red urine, painful urination, and difficult hot strangury are all manifestations of Heart heat transferring to the Small Intestine. Therefore, Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) is not used to directly drain Heart fire. Instead, Shengdihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) is used to nourish Kidney Water and cool Heart Fire, Mutong (Akebia Caulis) promotes urination and unblocks the Small Intestine, and Gancaoshao (Glycyrrhiza Tip) is added as an assistant, taking advantage of its ability to drain heat from the lowest part of the body, thereby relieving urethral pain and guiding away Heart Meridian heat. This formula is suitable for cases where Kidney Water is deficient and Heart Fire is not excessive, as it promotes diuresis without damaging Yin fluids, and drains fire without impairing Stomach Qi. If there is excess heat in the Heart Meridian, Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Zhuye (Leaf of Bambusa) must be added; in severe cases, Dahuang (Rhubarb Radix) may also be added. This is also known as the method of "removing firewood from under the cauldron" (addressing the root cause).
