[Verse] In the initial stage of a Yang syndrome, the affected area is red, swollen, burning, and painful. The base of the sore is well-defined, and the swelling is high and convex like the back of a bow. Around the seventh day, pain may fluctuate between intense and mild; by the fourteenth day (two sevens), pus gradually forms within the lesion. Pain decreases as pus drains, and the patient feels refreshed. As necrotic tissue sheds and new tissue grows, Qi and Blood become sufficient. The new flesh appears pearly and beautiful in color, fresh and moist like red pomegranate seeds. Naturally, the "Seven Evils" are absent, and the "Five Goods" are present. It must be known that this is a Pure Yang syndrome; with appropriate medical regulation, efficacy will naturally follow.
[Note] Whenever a carbuncle or ulcer begins with redness, swelling, burning, pain, and a contracted base (indicating the pathological spread is localized), clear margins (indicating no diffuse swelling), and high convexity (swelling like a bow), these all belong to Yang syndromes. Therefore, the processes of ulceration, pus discharge, shedding of necrotic tissue, regeneration of new tissue, and wound contraction are all relatively easy.
[Verse] In the initial stage of a Yin syndrome, the lesion is small like a millet seed, without redness or swelling, presenting as a stiff nodule. The texture is woody and hard, without pain or burning heat. The base of the sore is flat, wide, dark, and lusterless. After seven days, it neither ulcerates nor putrefies; it becomes depressed, soft, and devoid of pus, forming an empty cavity. The tissue growing on the sore resembles shed nail plates, and nodules within the pores resemble flowers holding their stamens. If the pus is purple-black, scanty, and foul-smelling, and if the "Seven Evils" appear, death is certain. It must be known that this is a Pure Yin syndrome; even with the medical skills of Qi Bo or Huang Di, life expectancy will be short.
[Note] Whenever a carbuncle or ulcer begins as a millet-seed-sized nodule, without redness, swelling, burning heat, or pain, with a woody-hard texture, a diffuse base, and dark, lusterless color, these all belong to Yin syndromes. Therefore, they fail to ulcerate and putrefy. An empty cavity without pus, tissue resembling nail plates that does not shed, nodules in pores resembling flowers holding seeds, and purple-black, thin, foul-smelling pus are all signs of difficult-to-cure conditions.
[Verse] When Yin and Yang are mixed, it constitutes a dangerous syndrome. Yang indicates auspiciousness, while Yin indicates ominous outcomes, clearly distinguishing life from death. Symptoms may resemble Yang but present only with slight pain and slight swelling; or resemble Yin but show partial hardness and partial elevation. Swelling without ulceration is due to Spleen deficiency; ulceration without healing is due to excessive pus (or insufficient Zheng Qi). Although the "Five Goods" may be partially present, the "Seven Evils" cannot be entirely avoided. If the patient can eat normally and find food tasty, and urination and defecation are regulated, treatment is feasible. Following the correct methods for treatment yields prompt results; as Yang increases and Yin diminishes, the condition can naturally be regulated.
[Note] For any carbuncle or ulcer, where symptoms resemble Yang but lack significant burning heat and swelling/pain, or resemble Yin but lack significant woody hardness and depression, this belongs to a Half-Yin Half-Yang dangerous syndrome. If auspicious signs gradually emerge, survival is possible; if ominous signs gradually emerge, death ensues.
