Treats wind-phlegm obstructing and failing to descend, with a sound in the throat like sawing, or swelling and fullness due to dampness invasion.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) [large ones] 14 pieces; Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus cum Spina) [roasted] 1 stalk; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian; Baifan (Alumen) 2 qian. The above four ingredients are ground into powder. Take a small amount of fresh juice from Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), mix it with one zhan of warm water, add one qian of the powder, and administer by gavage. If phlegm and saliva are vomited out, the patient will regain consciousness.
[Collected Notes] Ke Qin stated: There are three methods for expelling pathogenic factors: sweating, vomiting, and purging. Zhang Zhongjing established two formulas for vomiting—Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) and Gouti San (Melon Seed Powder)—to guide heat pathogens upward and outward, and to drive cold pathogens away. Cases not caused by external contraction but resulting from the gradual accumulation of rich wine and heavy flavors, which condense into stubborn phlegm, can suddenly block the throat when taking advantage of deficiency. Qi fails to circulate, leading to sudden collapse, eyes rolling back and staring straight, and a sawing sound in the throat; this is called Tan Jue (Phlegm Syncope). As predecessors said, "strange diseases often belong to phlegm," referring to this condition. Without using harsh medicines to attack it, stubborn phlegm cannot be quickly eliminated. Therefore, the pungency of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) is used to disperse it; the sweetness of Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) is used to induce vomiting; the astringency of Baifan (Alumen) is used to consolidate it; and the勇 (courage/potency) of Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus cum Spina) is used to open obstructions. This has the momentum of breaking through gates and seizing doors. It is only suitable for those whose constitution is generally solid but temporarily deficient. Once the obstruction is slightly relieved, other medicines should be continued; excessive use should be avoided to prevent damaging Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi). For those who are weak in their usual state, both attacking and tonifying should be combined. Adding powder of Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus cum Spina) and Baifan (Alumen) to Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) to induce vomiting would be appropriate. If mistakenly treated as Fengzhong (Wind Stroke), life will be far away.
Treats Wind-Cold lodging in the Stomach, presenting with deviation of the mouth and eye, aversion to wind and cold, stiffness and spasm of the four limbs, and a floating and tight pulse.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma); Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix); Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix); Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix); Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix); Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix); Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix); Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). The above ten ingredients are decocted in water and taken orally.
[Collected Notes] Li Zhongzi stated: Great indeed! Pi Wei (Spleen and Stomach) serves as the master of the five Zang organs. When Wood excess causes Wind pathogen to overflow, the official responsible for granaries (Spleen/Stomach) is constrained. Since the Spleen governs the four limbs, flaccidity and bi-syndrome occur. The mouth is the external manifestation of Earth (Spleen), and the eyes are the external manifestation of Wood (Liver); thus, both are affected. Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) are herbs specific to the Yangming channel, so they are used as troops entering directly. Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) harmonize Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) qi; Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) disperse wind pathogens; Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) assists wind-dispelling herbs in inducing sweating, ensuring no area is left unpenetrated. Furthermore, relying on Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to tonify and harmonize allows Da Qi (Great Qi) to circulate throughout the body, leaving no room for pathogenic factors to remain!
