Line: In myopia (nearsightedness), vision is clear at near distances but blurred at far distances. This condition arises from insufficient Yang Qi being invaded by Yin pathogens. The treatment should employ Dingzhi Wan (Stabilize the Mind Pill), which contains Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), and Baifushen (Poria with Hostwood).
Formula: Dingzhi Wan (Stabilize the Mind Pill)
Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) 2 liang, Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) [remove heart] 2 liang, Zhusha (Cinnabaris) [finely ground, set aside] 3 qian, Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 1 liang, Baifushen (Poria with Hostwood) 1 liang.
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like wutong seeds. Coat the pills with Zhusha (Cinnabaris) powder. Take 50 pills per dose, administered after meals with rice water decoction.
Annotation: [1] "Neng jin qie yuan" (seeing near but fearing far) does not refer to congenital myopia. It describes a condition where one previously had no such symptoms; objects viewed at close range are clear, while those at a distance appear dim.
[2] This occurs because the patient has an excess of Yin and insufficiency of Yang. When Yang is invaded by Yin, its luminous energy cannot extend outward to distant objects.
[3] It is appropriate to use Dingzhi Wan (Stabilize the Mind Pill) to tonify the Heart and strengthen the Shen (Spirit). Once the Shen is sufficient, distant vision will naturally improve.
Line: Dilated pupil (tong shen) causes the cornea (Feng Lun/Wind Wheel) to appear narrow. This is caused by pathogenic heat steaming internally and Wind Qi attacking upwards. It may also result from excessive thinking, anger, phlegm, cold pathogens, or malaria. The treatment involves Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) added with Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Hanshuishi (Halloysitum Rubrum), and Chongweizi (Fructus Viticis).
Formula: Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill), also known as Qianghuo Tuiyi Wan (Notopterygium Decortication Pill)
Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) [stir-fried with wine] 1 liang 3 qian, Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [stir-fried with wine] 5 qian, Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) [washed with wine] 3 qian, Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae) [prepared with wine] 2 qian, Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) [washed with wine] 3 qian, Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 3 qian, Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) [stir-fried with salt water] 3 qian, Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) [baked] 8 qian, Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) 8 qian, Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae) 5 qian, Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) 3 qian, Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) [prepared with wine] 5 qian, Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) 3 qian, Hanshuishi (Halloysitum Rubrum) 3 qian, Chongweizi (Fructus Viticis) 5 qian.
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like wutong seeds. Take 3 qian per dose, administered on an empty stomach with warm boiled water.
Annotation: [1] "Tong shen san da" (dilated pupil) refers to the dilation of the pupil, causing the cornea (Feng Lun/Wind Wheel) to appear as only a narrow ring, thin as a thread.
[2] This condition is caused by internal steaming of pathogenic heat and upward attack of Wind Qi. It can also be caused by conditions such as worry, anger, phlegm-fire, wind-cold, malaria, or postpartum blood stasis. It is appropriate to treat with Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill).
