To treat stomach injury caused by dietary excess, spleen injury caused by fatigue and overwork, leading to deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach, sinking of Yang Qi, and invasion of Yin Fire. During the summer season, this treatment should be adopted.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae) [soaked in rice washing water and stir-fried], Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) [honey-fried], Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii) 1 liang, Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 8 qian, Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 1.5 liang, Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) [stir-fried with wine] 5 qian, Huangqin (Cortex Scutellariae) [stir-fried], Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 7 qian, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) a small amount [use slightly during late summer, remove when the season passes]. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with fresh ginger and jujube.
[Collected Annotations] Wang Ang stated: Li Guo said: Once the Spleen and Stomach are damaged, Yang Qi is diminished daily. The clear Qi of the Spleen and Stomach sinks, allowing turbid Yin Fire to ascend and invade, resembling a state where there is only autumn and winter but no spring and summer. Only by using wind herbs with thin aroma and flavor to raise and generate Yang Qi, assisted by bitter-cold substances to drain the fire within Yin, can Yin cease to cause disease and Yang Qi be extended. In this formula, Renshen, Huangqi, Baizhu, and Gancao are used to tonify the Spleen and Stomach. Qianghuo, Shengma, and Chaihu are added as assistants to aid the ascent of Yang; Shigao, Huangqin, and Huanglian are added as assistants to drain Yin Fire. Suppose a patient cannot eat and is emaciated; this is the manifestation of the primary disease. The pulse at the right Guan position is slow and weak; this is the primary pulse. If the primary pulse is accompanied by a wiry pulse, or if the primary pulse is accompanied by one or two symptoms such as fullness and obstruction in the four limbs, strangury, difficult urination, or muscle twitching, this indicates Liver Wood attacking the Spleen and Stomach, and wind herbs should be added to drain Liver Wood. If the pulse is accompanied by a surging and large quality, and symptoms include one or two of muscle heat, vexation-heat, or red face, this indicates Heart Fire attacking the Spleen and Stomach, and herbs that drain Heart Fire should be added. If the pulse is accompanied by a floating and choppy quality, and symptoms include one or two of shortness of breath, rebellious Qi, wheezing and cough, profuse phlegm, or rough skin, this indicates Lung Metal attacking the Spleen and Stomach, and herbs that drain the Lungs and tonify Qi should be added. If the pulse is accompanied by a deep and fine quality, and symptoms include one or two of frequent yawning or timidity, this indicates Kidney Water counter-attacking the Spleen and Stomach, and herbs that drain Kidney Water and drain Yin Fire should be added. The reason for stating this is to make people aware that all diseases arise from the Spleen and Stomach, and prescribers should add seasonal herbs according to this method.
