When wind-heat pathogenic factors are congested and excessive, resulting in excess patterns affecting the exterior, interior, and all three Jiaos (San Jiao), this formula is indicated.
Fangfeng Radix Saposhnikoviae, Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustri Chuanxiong, Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Shaoyao Radix Paeoniae Alba, Dahuang Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, Bohe Herba Menthae Haplocalycis, Mahuang Herba Ephedrae, Lianqiao Fructus Forsythiae, Mangxiao Natrii Sulfas each half tael; Shigypsum Fibrosum, Huangqin Radix Scutellariae, Jiegeng Radix Platycodonis each one tael; Huashi Talcum three taels; Gancao Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae three taels; Jingjie Herba Schizonepetae, Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Zhizi Fructus Gardeniae each two qian and a half; Shengjiang Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens three slices. Take three qian per dose.
[Collected Annotations] Wu Kun stated: Fangfeng and Mahuang are exterior-releasing herbs; wind-heat residing in the skin and muscles is discharged through sweating when aided by them. Jingjie and Bohe are herbs that clear the upper burner; wind-heat residing at the vertex is discharged through the nasal orifices when aided by them. Dahuang and Mangxiao are purgative herbs; wind-heat residing in the intestines and stomach is discharged through defecation when aided by them. Huashi and Zhizi are herbs regulating water passages; wind-heat residing in the Jue Du (San Jiao waterways) is discharged through urination when aided by them. When wind pathogen overflows into the diaphragm, invading the Lung and Stomach, Shigypsum and Jiegeng are used to clear the Lung and Stomach. Meanwhile, Lianqiao and Huangqin are employed to dispel wandering fire from various meridians. Since liver wood governs wind-related disorders, Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Shaoyao are used to harmonize liver blood. Gancao and Baizhu are used to harmonize stomach qi and strengthen the spleen. Liu Shouzhen was skilled in treating fire pathogens; the principle of this formula is indeed detailed and comprehensive! It also treats alopecia accompanied by macules/rashes and excess fire in the three Jiaos. If Mangxia and Dahuang are removed from the complete formula, it is named Shuangjie San (Double-Release Powder). For releasing the exterior, it contains Fangfeng, Mahuang, Bohe, Jingjie, and Chuanxiong; for clearing the interior, it contains Shigypsum, Huashi, Huangqin, Zhizi, and Lianqiao; additionally, Danggui and Shaoyao harmonize the blood, while Jiegeng, Baizhu, and Gancao regulate qi. With both Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) qi harmonized, and both exterior and interior unobstructed, it is called "Double-Release." The name "Tongsheng" implies the profound efficacy of its use.
Also known as Chonghe Tang (Harmonizing Decoction), it is a general formula for dispersing pathogens across all four seasons. Qianghuo Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, Fangfeng Radix Saposhnikoviae, Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustri Chuanxiong, Baizhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Xixin Herba Asari, Cangzhu Rhizoma Atractylodis, Huangqin Radix Scutellariae, Gancao Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae, Shengdi Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, add Shengjiang Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens three slices and Congbai Bulbus Allii Cepae three stalks; decoct with water and take orally.
