Severe cold pain in the chest and heart region, vomiting with inability to eat or drink, coldness in the abdomen, upward rushing of qi, skin rising with visible head-like and foot-like protrusions, severe pain throughout the upper and lower body that cannot be touched, Zhiyi: Da Jian Zhong Tang (Greatly Build the Middle Decoction).
[Annotation]
"Severe cold pain in the chest and heart" refers to severe pain extending from the abdomen up to connect with the chest and heart. It is named "severe cold pain" because it implies other severe cold symptoms such as limb reversal (Jue Ni) and pulse hiding (Mai Fu). Vomiting and inability to eat indicate that extreme cold is rejecting and obstructing the middle jiao. The upward rushing causing skin protrusions with visible shapes indicates that extreme cold is gathering and solidifying externally. Severe pain throughout the upper and lower body that cannot be touched indicates that the severe pain in the internal zang-fu organs and external meridians is also due to extreme cold. The treatment uses Da Jian Zhong Tang; Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper) and Jiangjiang (Dried Ginger) greatly disperse cold pathogens, while Renshen (Ginseng) and Jiaoyi (Malt Sugar) greatly build up middle jiao deficiency. After taking the medicine, cover warmly to induce slight sweating, then the cold will depart and pain will stop. This is the method for treating cold in the chest and heart.
Shujiao (De-sweated) two he, Jiangjiang four liang, Renshen two liang.
The above three herbs are boiled in four sheng of water to obtain two sheng of liquid. Strain the dregs, add one sheng of Jiaoyi, and simmer over low heat to obtain one and a half sheng. Divide into two warm doses. If after the time of one meal (Yi Cuan), one can drink two sheng of congee, continue taking it afterwards. One should consume millet congee for the day and keep covered and warm.
