Discourse: "Fu" (Necrotic Tissue) refers to dead flesh. Various medical texts state: if necrotic tissue is not removed, new flesh cannot grow, because necrotic tissue can erode and soak healthy flesh; therefore, it should be removed promptly. For patients with robust Qi (Vital Energy), surgical excision with a knife is effective; for patients with deficient Qi, reliance is placed solely on the dissolving power of medicines. Generally, drugs that remove necrotic tissue are essential in dermatology and surgery.
Formula: Baijiang Dan (White Reduction Cinnabar)
Indications: This cinnabar treats carbuncles, back infections, and all types of Ding (hard, deep-seated boils). Use a small amount. For large sores, use 5-6 li; for small sores, use 1-2 li. Mix with water and apply to the head of the sore. In early stages, it immediately causes blistering and resolution; when pus has formed, it promotes immediate ulceration; necrotic tissue detaches, swelling subsides. It is indeed a life-saving miracle drug.
Composition: Zhu Sha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*), Xiong Huang (Realgar, *Realgar); each 2 qian.
Shui Yin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*), Peng Sha (Borax, *Borax*); 1 liang and 5 qian respectively.
Huo Xiao (Saltpeter, *Natrii Nitras*), Yan Shi (Salt, *Natrii Chloridum*).
Bai Fan (Alum, *Alumen*), Zao Fan (Green Vitriol, *Vitriolum Ferrosum); each 1.5 liang.
Preparation: First, grind Zhu Sha, Xiong Huang, and Peng Sha finely. Add Yan Shi, Bai Fan, Huo Xiao, Zao Fan, and Shui Yin, grinding together until the mercury particles are no longer visible. Place a Yangcheng jar on mild charcoal fire, slowly adding the medicine to melt completely. Use mild fire to drive off moisture and retrieve. If the fire is too strong and dry, mercury will volatilize; if not dry enough, the medicine will collapse and become useless; this is the difficulty. Cover with another Yangcheng jar. Cut cotton paper into half-inch strips. Grind Jar Mud, Caoxie Tan (Mold from straw sandals), and Guang Fen (Light Powder) finely. Mix with salt brine to a very wet consistency. Apply alternating layers of mud and paper, four to five layers at the seal, and two to three layers on the jar containing medicine. Dig a small pit in the ground, place a rice bowl filled with water at the bottom. Place the empty jar inside the bowl. Seal the rim of the pit with tiles flush with the ground to prevent charcoal ash from falling into the bowl. Cover the medicine jar with live charcoal fire, ensuring no gaps. After approximately three incense sticks' time, extinguish the fire and let it cool before opening. Approximately one tael of medicine should remain. If smoke rises from the jar edges during smelting, immediately seal with a brush dipped in salt mud.
Another Formula: Hongsheng Dan (Red Ascending Cinnabar)
Indications: This cinnabar treats post-ulceration of all sores and ulcers, extracting toxins, removing necrotic tissue, and promoting muscle regeneration. For hard sores with dark purple/black flesh, apply a small amount of cinnabar with a chicken feather; the area will immediately become red and vibrant. Without these red and white cinnabars, surgeons find it difficult to achieve immediate results.
Composition: Zhu Sha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) - 5 qian; Xiong Huang (Realgar, *Realgar*) - 5 qian.
Shui Yin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) - 1 liang; Huo Xiao (Saltpeter, *Natrii Nitras*) - 4 liang.
Bai Fan (Alum, *Alumen*) - 1 liang; Zao Fan (Green Vitriol, *Vitriolum Ferrosum*) - 6 qian.
Preparation: First, crush the two alums and Huo Xiao. Place in a Datong ladle, add a small cup of Huo Jiu (Fire Wine/Alcohol), and stew until dissolved. Retrieve when dry and grind finely. Separately, grind Shui Yin, Zhu Sha, and Xiong Huang finely until no particles are visible. Then mix with the nitrate-alum powder. Coat a Yangcheng jar with paper-mud paste to a thickness of one finger, dry in shade, and gently pat to prevent cracks. Jar mud can also be used. Repair any cracks with jar mud, dry thoroughly, and sun-dry. Only when crack-free should the previous medicines be added. Seal the jar mouth with an iron oil lamp cover, add an iron beam lamp, and tighten top and bottom with iron wire. Stuff jar seams with cotton wicks dipped in honey. Seal externally with cooked gypsum powder mixed with vinegar. Place two pieces of charcoal fire on the lamp to heat the lamp mouth and dry the seal. Drive three large nails into the ground, place the jar on the nails, and put a large piece of solid charcoal under the jar. Build a Baiyan Furnace around it. Smelt for three incense sticks. First stick: use bottom fire; if too hot, mercury flies up first. Second stick: use fire filling half the jar; wipe the lamp with a water-dipped brush. Third stick: fire level with jar mouth; fan it, wiping the lamp frequently to prevent drying, which would cause premature mercury volatilization. After three sticks, extinguish fire, cool, and open. The medicinal qi is now sufficient. Scrape 6-7 qian from the lamp, grind extremely finely, and store in a porcelain jar. Prepare salt-brine mud beforehand, brush around the jar mouth with a brush to prevent gas leakage, lest green smoke appear indicating mercury loss, rendering it useless.
[Prescription Verse] Baijiang Dan is a life-snatching cinnabar, draining pus and resolving necrosis instantly,
Zhu Sha, Xiong Huang, Mercury, and Borax enter,
along with Saltpeter, Salt, and Alum; remove Borax and Salt to make Hongsheng Dan,
promoting muscle growth and regeneration becomes easy.
Another Formula: Yuanzhu Gao (Pearl Ointment)
Indications: This ointment treats abscesses about to rupture; applying it draws pus out through pores. For already incised wounds, dip a cotton swab in the ointment and insert it into the hole to expel pus and necrotic residue; application causes immediate dissolution.
Composition: Mu Bie Zi Rou (Seed of Momordica Cochinchinensis, *Momordicae Semen*) - 14 seeds; Xie Mao (Spider Crab, *Portunus trituberculatus*) - 81 crabs.
Liu Zhi (Willow Branch, *Salicis Ramulus*) - 49 cun; Lv Jia Pian (Donkey Hide Slice, *Corii Asini Preparata*) - 3 qian.
Cao Wu (Aconitum Kusnezoffii Root, *Aconiti Radix*) - 1 qian; Ma You (Sesame Oil, *Sesami Oleum*) - 2 liang.
Preparation: Soak the above herbs for seven days. Fry the willow branches over gentle heat, remove dregs, add three Ba Dou Ren (Seminal Crotonis, *Crotonis Fructus*), fry until black, pour into a mortar, grind into a paste. Add She Xiang (Musk, *Moschi Fermentum*) 1 fen, mix well, and store in a jar.
[Prescription Verse] Expelling pus and resolving necrosis uses Yuanzhu Gao,
Mu Bie Zi, Xie Mao, and Willow Branch together,
Donkey hide, Cao Wu, oil, and meat soaked,
Fried branches, Ba Dou, and Musk applied.
