The *Duanju Fang* records: The Yellow Emperor said: A person aged six years and above is called "Xiao" (small/child), eighteen years and above is called "Shao" (youth), twenty years and above is called "Zhuang" (strong/adult), and fifty years and above is called "Lao" (elderly). As for those under six years old, the medical classics do not record them; therefore, illnesses in nursing infants are difficult to treat due to a lack of authoritative references. In the middle ancient period, Wu Li's *Lunxin Jing* for children was used to divinate longevity and judge life and death from diseases; it is said that specialized formulas for the young have been passed down through generations.
Current verification: The *Taisu Jing* states: A newborn infant is called "Ying"; one who can smile is called "KT Mai" (i.e., toddler).
The *Jingyi Jie* states: A newborn infant is called "Chizi" (red child).
The *Chan Jing* states: Every newborn should be one chi six cun long and weigh seventeen jin.
The *Zhenjiu Jing* states: Children of ten years old and the elderly of seventy years old should not undergo acupuncture; moxibustion and sweet medicines are suitable.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: For neonates more than seven days old but less than one year old, moxibustion should not exceed seven moxa cones, with each cone the size of a sparrow's droppings.
The *Chan Jing* states: When a baby is first born, one must chant: "Heaven as father, Earth as mother." Recite the gold coin mantra ninety-nine times to ensure the child's longevity. Upon the birth of a child, one should also rub their palms with hair, termed "Li," signifying a lifespan of a thousand years. One should rise only when they reach the rank of an official with a salary of two thousand shi, which is highly auspicious. If possible, if the child is destined to become an emperor, king, prince, empress, or high minister, one should bestow titles accordingly before rising to hold them, which is auspicious.
The *Chan Jing* states: When a newborn touches the ground, one must quickly remove the blood clots held in the mouth and on the tongue. If not removed immediately, the blood will coagulate shortly after; (if the infant cries out in fright and) swallows the (blood), it may cause various abdominal diseases in the child. (Method to remove blood clots: Wrap cotton around the fingertip to wipe it away).
The *Qianjin Fang* states: If there is blood in the newborn's mouth, it must be removed; if swallowed, it leads to Pi disease (masses/lumps).
The *Qianjin Fang* states: After a newborn emerges from the womb, one should first use a finger to probe and remove any foul blood from the mouth, then bathe the infant. After cutting the umbilical cord and dressing the child, do not yet administer Cinnabar Honey. Take a piece of Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) equal in length to the middle finger segment, crush it, add two he of water, and boil until one he remains. Wrap cotton around a stick, dip it into the decoction, and let the infant suckle, similar to the method for Cinnabar Honey. Continue sucking until approximately one shell volume is consumed, then stop once it enters the stomach. The infant should vomit readily, expelling foul fluids from the chest. After vomiting, assess hunger and thirst. Offer it again to the neck/mouth as before. If given again and no vomiting occurs, simply offer the remainder of this one he until exhausted, thereby expelling foul fluids. This ensures the infant's spirit and wisdom remain clear and free from disease. If no vomiting occurs, it means there was no foul blood contained. Do not give it again. (The *Duanju Fang* agrees with this.)
