The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: Mania is caused by wind pathogen invading and merging with the Yang aspect. When wind pathogen enters the blood vessels, it causes an imbalance in the deficiency and excess of Yin and Qi. If one is excess and the other deficiency, Blood and Qi will contend with each other. When they merge into the Yang aspect, mania erupts, characterized by running behavior. The patient may consider themselves noble and virtuous or claim to be divine.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: During a manic episode, there is little sleep, no hunger, self-perception of nobility and virtue, self-assurance in discernment, arrogance, loud cursing, and continuous activity day and night.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) provides a formula for sudden onset of mania:
Have the patient lie prone on the ground and pour cold water over their face continuously throughout the day.
It also states: For sudden mania with delusional speech as if possessed by ghosts:
Tightly bind both thumbs of the patient with a steamer belt, then moxa the points opposite the elbow creases under the left and right hypochondrium simultaneously. Apply seven moxa cones at each site. After a short while, the ghost-like speech ceases, and the patient will state their name.
Another prescription for manic rage, cursing, throwing objects, and hitting people:
Moxa the points at the corners of the mouth (Dicang, ST4) at the junction of red and white skin, one cone at each side, treating both sides simultaneously.
Also moxa the Mingchen point (EX-B5) between the scapulae three times, repeating every three days.
Another method: Moxa thirty cones at the raphe below the scrotum; for women, moxa the Yinhui point (CV1).
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Formulas from Master Ge) provides a formula for sudden onset of mania:
Burn toads, grind into powder, administer one *cunshi* (square-inch measure) per dose, three times daily.
Another method: Boil three-year-old dried cattail pollen, strain, and drink the decoction.
It also states: For delusional speech as if possessed by ghosts:
Needle the area under the nail of the big toe, insert slightly and stop.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Internal heat arising from consumptive disorders is due to insufficiency of Yin Qi and excess of Yang Qi, thus generating internal heat from within, not caused by external pathogens invading.
The *Jiyao Fang* (Extremely Important Formulas) provides Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) to treat all conditions of deficiency-heat with qi stagnation and obstruction:
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (2 liang), Rheii Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) (2 liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (3 liang).
Grind these three ingredients, mix with honey, and form pills the size of wu zi (wu berry seeds). Take three pills after meals, three times daily.
It also states: To treat deficiency-heat in the heart and diaphragm forcing upward toward the throat causing dry mouth:
Poria (Fuling) (5 liang), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Maimendong) (3 sheng 2 he, remove hearts), Pruni Mume Fructus (Wumei) flesh (2 liang).
Process these ingredients, mix with honey, and form pills the size of jujube pits. Hold in the mouth until dissolved and swallow. Hold six or seven pills day and night. If bitter taste occurs after eating, add Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) (3 liang).
The *Guangji Fang* (Guangji Formulas) provides Dihuang Yin (Rehmannia Decoction) to treat deficiency-heat-induced vomiting, inability to eat, and irritability:
Fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice (Shengdihuang Zhi) (6 liu), Phragmitis Rhizoma (Lugen) (1 handful), Fresh Ophiopogonis Tuber (Sheng Maimendong) (1 sheng), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (8 fen), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) (6 fen), Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma (Shengjiang) (8 fen), White Honey (Bami) (3 he).
Cut the herbs, boil in 6 sheng of water to reduce to 2 sheng, strain, add Rehmannia juice and honey. Divide into three warm doses. Take one dose every time the patient walks about four or five li. Do not cause diarrhea.
The Jingxin Fang's Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill) treats indigestion due to deficiency-heat, dizziness pulling pain in the chest and hypochondrium, throat discomfort, oral ulcers, and loss of appetite:
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) (1 liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (1 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (3 liang), Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen) (2 liang), Gentianae Radix (Longdan) (2 liang).
Grind these five ingredients, mix with honey, and form pills the size of wu zi. Take five pills, three times daily.
It also states: Shengdihuang Jian (Fresh Rehmannia Decoction) treats deficiency-heat and bloody dysentery:
Fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice (3 sheng). Place the juice in a copper vessel and simmer over low heat until thick like maltose syrup. Take 2 he per dose.

Grind these six substances into fine powder, mix with honey, and form pills the size of wu zi. Take five pills, three times daily. If ineffective, increase to seven pills.
The *Ge Shi Fang* states: For heat knot in the chest, vexation, fullness, confusion, delusional speech, and restlessness:
Take 1 sheng of Genkwa Flos (Yuanhua), boil in 3 sheng of water to reduce to half a sheng. Soak cloth in the hot liquid and apply as a compress to the upper chest. Replace when dry.
