The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: Postpartum wind-stroke with trismus (lockjaw) occurs due to deficiency of blood and qi, allowing wind pathogen to invade the sinews of the cheeks and mouth.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Prescriptions) states: Da Dou Zi Tang (Black Soybean Decoction) treats postpartum wind-stroke resulting in critical illness. Symptoms include rigidity of the back and trismus, or merely irritability, fever, and extreme thirst, or heaviness of the head and body, or pruritus of the body; in severe cases, there is vomiting, upward reversal of qi, and fixed gaze. These are all caused by wind-strike due to deficiency-cold-dampness.
Take three sheng of soybeans, stir-fry until thoroughly cooked, until no sound is produced when cooked. Prepare a vessel in advance, pour five sheng of clear wine over the hot beans, then strain to obtain two sheng of juice. Take it all at once. Keep warm with a blanket until a slight sweat appears and the body is slightly moistened, then recovery ensues. Currently, postpartum women take this slightly according to routine, first to prevent wind pathogen invasion, second to resolve blood stasis. It is said that Zhou Decheng's wife, while pregnant, touched the edge of a basin causing fetal injury, with the fetus dying in the intestines and abdomen. After three days of critical condition, she recovered after taking this wine decoction. Later, it was used to treat postpartum restlessness with good results.
(Note: The *Jingxin Fang* records treatments for various diseases of postpartum wind-stroke.)
It also states: For postpartum sudden spasm with trismus, cyanotic complexion, and rigid limbs with opisthotonos (backward arching), use the following prescription:
Administer one sheng of Zhu Li Zhi (Bamboo Sap Juice) to restore consciousness; it is especially effective for wind-stroke. (Note: Examination of the *Ge Shi Fang* suggests drinking more.)
The *Ge Shi Fang* states: For wind-stroke or wind-spasm, where the whole body is cold and stiff, trismus prevents opening the mouth, and the patient is unconscious, use the following method:
Pour boiling water into a pot to generate steam. Have the woman place her feet over the mouth of the pot to fumigate. Replace the water when it cools down.
Another prescription: Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) one sheng, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) five pieces, boiled in five sheng of wine for three boils. Divide into three doses.
Note: In the *Lu Yan Fang*, when using Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), "lei" refers to one whole piece, selecting the plump ones.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats various postpartum diseases as well as wind-stroke spasm and trismus with the Li Xue Zhi Tong Du Huo Zi Tang (Sanguis Draining and Pain-Relieving Black Soybean Decoction with Angelica Pubescens):
Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) one jin, Da Dou (Glycine Max Seed) one jin, Jiu (Vinum) one dou three sheng.
Soak Du Huo in wine for two nights. If urgent, boil gently until reduced by three sheng, then filter. Independently stir-fry Da Dou until extremely charred. Wash the Da Dou with the Du Huo wine, filter, and take one sheng. Administer three times during the day and once at night.
The *Lu Yan Fang* treats postpartum wind-stroke and pain from drinking fluids:
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) two liang, Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) four liang.
Boil these two ingredients in eight sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Divide into doses of one sheng each.
The *Seng Shen Fang* treats postpartum wind-stroke with trismus:
Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) eight liang, Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) six liang, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) two liang, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) six liang.
Boil these four ingredients in seven sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Divide into four doses.
(Note: The *Boji Anzhong Fang* records: Du Huo two liang, Ge Gen one liang, Gan Cao one liang, Sheng Jiang two liang. Boil these in two sheng of water to obtain eight ge. Divide into five or six doses.)
The *Boji Anzhong Fang* treats postpartum wind-stroke with opisthotonos and inability to speak:
Suan (Allii Sativi Bulbus) twenty cloves.
Boil in one sheng and half of water to obtain five ge. Administer by灌 (pouring/instilling). This is highly effective.
The *Chan Jing* treats postpartum wind-stroke with trismus using Du Huo Tang (Angelica Pubescens Decoction):
Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) three liang, Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) two liang, Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) two liang, Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex) two liang, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) two liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) two liang.
Boil these six ingredients together in three sheng of clear wine and seven sheng of water to obtain two sheng and half. Divide into three doses.
