The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: After childbirth, both Qi and Blood are deficient. If exposed to Wind-Cold pathogens, Qi and Blood clash with each other. Following the movement of Qi, they surge up and down intermittently, rushing upward to the epigastrium and attacking the abdomen, thus causing pain in the heart and abdomen.
The *Chan Jing* (Classic of Childbirth) provides the Lizhong Danggui Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Angelica Decoction for Replenishing Deficiency and Dispelling Wind-Cold) for treating postpartum deficiency-cold in the abdomen, heart and abdominal pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, and cold extremities:
Gancao (Licorice Root, 3 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 2 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 1 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 1 liang), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 0.5 liang).
These five herbs are decocted in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. The decoction is divided into three doses. It is highly effective.
The *Zimu Milu* (Secret Record of Mother and Child) provides a formula for treating postpartum heart and abdominal pain:
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (each 6 fen).
Grind into powder. Take one fangcun bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch spoonful) with warm wine on an empty stomach, twice daily.
The *Qipo Fang* (Formula of Qibo) treats heart and abdominal pain in humans; this is also a formula for postpartum blood stasis:
Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 jin).
Decoct in approximately 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Once blood stasis and lochia fluids are discharged, the patient will recover.
The *Jingxin Fang* (Heart-Mirroring Formula) treats postpartum abdominal distension:
Heidou (Black Soybean, 1 sheng).
Decoct in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Clarify the liquid, then combine with 5 sheng of clear wine and decoct further until 3 sheng remain. Divide into three doses.
The *Zimu Milu* (Secret Record of Mother and Child) provides Xiaodou Tang (Adzuki Bean Decoction) for treating postpartum retention of turbid fluids in the abdomen, abdominal distension that does not subside:
Xiaodou (Adzuki Bean, 3 sheng).
Decoct in 1 dou of water until cooked. Drink all the decoction immediately; symptoms will be relieved instantly.
The *Jingxin Fang* (Heart-Mirroring Formula) treats postpartum high fever, irritability, and fullness in the chest, hypochondrium, and abdomen:
Burn Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn) into powder, and take it with cold water.
The *Guangji Fang* (Universal Relief Formula) treats postpartum irritability in the heart and chest, stagnant Qi and Blood, and subcostal mass preventing eating:
Shengdihuang Zhi (Fresh Rehmannia Juice, 1 sheng), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, powdered, 1 liang), Qingjiu (Clear Wine, 5 he), Shengjiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 5 he).
Mix these ingredients and decoct for three or four boils. Strain the dregs. Take 4-5 he warm at a time. Consume small amounts of food during the treatment period.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: Childbirth injures Blood and exhausts Qi, making the Couli (pores and interstices) deficient. Wind-Evil invades due to this deficiency. When Evil clashes with Qi, Qi cannot circulate freely, resulting in deficiency edema. Mild, floating swelling resembling inflated air indicates Evil clashing with Qi, known as Qi edema. If the skin becomes thin like a ripe plum, it transforms into Water edema.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Treatment Formula) treats severe postpartum Wind-Cold causing life-threatening swelling:
Take 4 sheng of soil from mouse burrows, heat it thoroughly, place it in a cloth bag, and apply it to the abdomen and the area above and below the yin region. This allows heat to enter the abdomen, which is beneficial.
The *Luyan Fang* (Verified Formula) treats residual pain after childbirth, as well as blood stasis combined with Wind-induced edema:
Cut genuine Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) into pieces. Decoct in 1 dou of wine until reduced to 7 sheng. Fry 4 sheng of soybeans until scorched. Pour the hot decoction over the hot beans. Strain the dregs. Take an appropriate amount based on the condition, twice daily.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Thousand Gold Formula) treats postpartum Wind-induced edema where the face appears ready to crack:
Taking one dose of Zitang (Purple Decoction) cures the condition immediately; it is miraculous.
The *Jingxin Fang* (Heart-Mirroring Formula) treats postpartum severe swelling and fullness:
Wudou (Black Soybean, 1 dou). Decoct in 5 sheng (or 2 dou) of water until reduced to 5 sheng. Add 5 sheng of wine and decoct until 5 sheng remain. Divide into five doses.
The *Zimu Milu* (Secret Record of Mother and Child) treats generalized postpartum edema:
Take 1 sheng of Shengdihuang Zhi (Fresh Rehmannia Juice) and 2 he of wine. Warm and drink in one go.
The *Chan Jing* (Classic of Childbirth) provides Duhuo Tang (Angelica Pubescens Decoction) for treating various conditions caused by severe Wind affecting the body, including sudden swelling and Qi disorders:
Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Changlu (Changlu Root/Herb, specific regional herb), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (each 2 liang).
These four herbs are decocted in 1 dou of water until reduced to 4 sheng. Take the decoction and cover the patient to induce sweating.
