The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: When the exterior is deficient and the interior is excess, with heat-toxin flourishing internally, sores are likely to erupt frequently. In severe cases, they cover the entire body, resembling fire blisters. If the color is red... [text missing] It also says: When the heat-toxin qi from Shanghan (Cold Damage) is vigorous, sores often appear, colored white or red, manifesting on the skin with pustules forming at the head containing white pus; this indicates a lighter toxicity.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides formulas for treating Pea Pox (Variola):
At the initial stage when symptoms begin to appear, decoct five liang of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and take it to achieve a cure.
Another formula: Take high-quality honey and rub it over the sores all over the body.
Another formula: Decoct Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) with honey and apply/massage it onto the affected area.
Another formula: Use Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), two liang, add three sheng of water, boil down to one sheng, and take in one dose for recovery. (This aligns with the *Jiyao Fang*).
Another formula: Crush Xiaodou (Vigna angularis), mix with egg white (Jizi Bai), and apply as a poultice.
Another formula: Wipe the affected area with cloth used during menstruation.
Another formula: Qingmuxiang Tang (Decoction):
Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 2 liang), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 1 liang), Xunluxiang (Boswelliae Resina/Ru Xiang, 1 liang), Baifanshi (Alumen, 1 liang), Shexiang (Moschus, 2 fen).
Take the above five herbs, add four sheng of water, boil down to one and a half sheng, and divide into two doses. For those with intense heat-toxin, add one liang of Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu); if unavailable, substitute with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). For mild cases, remove... [text missing].
The *Ge Shi Fang* provides a formula for treating epidemic sores:
Boil Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) strongly in water, soak cotton in the liquid, and wash/wipe the affected area. Soaking in Kujiu (Vinegar) before boiling is even better.
The *Jiuji Dan Yan Fang* provides a formula for treating early-stage epidemic widespread sores:
Immediately administer Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction) to induce purgation, which will cause the sores to vanish.
Another formula: Drink one xiao sheng of Tiejiang (Iron Slurry) for immediate recovery.
Another formula: Take one ge of Xiaodou Mo (Powdered Vigna angularis), mixed with water; this is effective.
The *Xinlu Fang* provides a formula to eliminate scars from Pea Pox:
Apply Ying Shi Fen (Powdered Aquila粪便/Eagle Droppings). If the sore has dried, mix with Zhizhi (Porcine Fat) and apply, once or twice daily.
Another formula: Apply Hufen (Lead White/Basic Lead Carbonate) to the affected area.
Another formula: Mix Sangbai Zhi (Sap of Morus alba Root Bark) with Jizi Bai (Egg White) and apply.
Another formula: Apply honey.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: Mix Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) with Zhu Dan (Porcine Bile) and apply to the sores; do not disturb them. Once the scab falls off, no scar will remain.
Current verification: On June 26 of the ninth year of Tianping, an edict was issued to local governments stating: Regarding epidemics named Chiban Chuang (Red Spot Pox), at the onset, symptoms resemble Nueji (Malaria)... [text missing]; juices may be used at any temperature; consume Nuojing (Glutinous Rice) porridge with soup; after recovery, even after twenty days, one must not eat fresh fish, meat, fruits, vegetables, drink water, bathe, engage in sexual intercourse, walk forcefully, or be exposed to wind and rain. Fish such as Mackerel (Qing), Azi, and annual fish are forbidden; only dried Bo Yu (Abalone) and Jian Yu, when properly cooked, are acceptable.
