According to the *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): Hiccups (a condition characterized by involuntary spasms of the diaphragm resulting in a sudden, sharp intake of breath) occur due to the deficiency of both the Spleen and Stomach, combined with an invasion of Wind pathogen. Consequently, when new food enters the stomach, it cannot be properly digested and transported, causing the Qi of the grain to interact turbulently with the old and new food residues.
The *Ge Shi Fang* provides prescriptions for sudden, unceasing hiccups:
Drink newly drawn well water. (Note: According to the *Xin Lu Fang*, take two sheng [approx. 400ml] of Jinghua Shui [well water drawn at dawn]. Or several sheng.)
Another prescription: Simply hold your breath and stretch your body forcefully.
Another prescription: Vigorously scratch the center between the eyebrows while holding your breath.
Another prescription: Take two sheng of high-quality Dou Chi (Fermented Soybeans), boil them to extract the juice, and drink it.
Another prescription: Take one jin [approx. 600g] of Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), add one dou [approx. 10L] of water, boil down to three sheng, and divide into two doses.
Another prescription: Boiling Lugen (Reed Rhizome) is also effective. (Note: According to the *Qian Jin Fang*, boil three jin of Lugen concentratedly and drink the juice.)
Another prescription: Stimulate the nasal cavity with an object; for example, insert a small amount of Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit powder) into the nose to induce sneezing, which will stop the hiccups.
The *Lu Yan Fang* provides the Jupi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction) for treating vomiting and hiccups:
Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Root) (4 liang)
Jupi (Dried Tangerine Peel) (1 liang)
Gancao (Licorice Root) (1 liang)
These three ingredients are boiled in six sheng of water until reduced to two sheng. Each dose is seven he [approx. 140ml], taken three times a day.
The *Xin Lu Fang* provides prescriptions for hiccups:
Take boiling hot water [boiled ten times], the quantity being arbitrary.
Another prescription: Take five large liang of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Root), crush it with the peel, extract the juice, and ingest it.
Another prescription: Cut Ergen (Root of Arundo donax or similar reed) two sheng, add four sheng of water, boil down to one sheng and five he, and swallow slowly.
Another prescription: Take five liang of Jupi (Dried Tangerine Peel), add three sheng of water, boil down to one sheng, and divide into two or three doses.
Another prescription: Moxibustion on one cun [approx. 3.3cm] below the axilla. Also moxibustion on Weiwuan point.
The *Su Jing Ben Cao Zhu* (Commentary on Materia Medica by Su Jing) provides a prescription for hiccups: Drink the juice of Qiansui (Chinese Yam/Dioscorea opposita). Cui Yuxi's *Shi Jing* (Food Classic) states: Make flour from Shuyu (Chinese Yam), mix with juice, boil into porridge, and eat it.
The *Duan Ju Fang* provides prescriptions for hiccups:
Moxibustion of fifty zhuang [cones] at the hairy region of the axilla.
Another prescription: Moxibustion of fifty zhuang on Shiguan point.
The *Qian Jin Fang* provides prescriptions for hiccups:
Moxibustion on Chengjiang point, using moxa cones the size of wheat grains, seven zhuang.
Another prescription: Moxibustion seven zhuang at five cun below the umbilicus.
Another prescription: Boil three sheng of Dou Chi (Fermented Soybeans) and drink the juice.
Another prescription: Ingest one sheng of Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) on an empty stomach.
