The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: When Qi of the Large Intestine is excessive, it constitutes a "replete" condition, resulting in severe cutting pain within the intestines, as if pierced by awls or knives, without respite, accompanied by cold bi-syndrome (painful obstruction due to cold) and spasms in the lower back.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats deficiency-cold of the Large Intestine with diarrhea passing green and white substances, and borborygmus (rumbling of the intestines), using the Huanglian Bu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Tonification):
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 4 liang), Fuling (Poria, 3 liang), Xiongqiong (Radix Chuanxiong, 3 liang), Suan Shiliu Pi (Pericarpium Granati Acidum, 5 pieces), Diyu (Radix Sanguisorbae, 5 liang), Fulonggan (Lapis Dragae, size of a chicken egg).
These six herbs are cut, boiled in seven sheng of water until reduced to two sheng and five he, strained, then powdered Fulonggan is added and stirred well. The decoction is divided into three doses.
It further states: To treat excess-heat of the Large Intestine with abdominal distension and obstruction, and sores in the mouth, use the Shengjiang Xiechang Tang (Ginger Decoction for Draining the Intestines):
Su Jiang (Old Ginger Rhizome, 3 liang), Ju Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 3 liang), Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae, 14 pieces), Qing Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings from Green Bamboo, 3 liang), Sheng Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 10 liang), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 3 liang), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 3 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 2 liang), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 he), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, half sheng).
These eleven herbs are cut, boiled in seven sheng of water until reduced to three sheng, strained, then Mangxiao is added. The decoction is divided into three doses.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: When Qi of the Small Intestine is excessive, it constitutes a "replete" condition, resulting in heat syndrome of the Small Intestine, leading to exhaustion and dryness of fluids, and distension of the lower abdomen; this is referred to as repleteness of Small Intestine Qi.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats deficiency-cold of the Small Intestine with painful passage of red and white discharge, intestinal sliding/incontinence, and internal restlessness/irritability, using the Buyang Fang (Decoction for Tonifying Yang):
Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, 3 liang), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 4 liang), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, 4 liang), Diyu Pi (Cortex Sanguisorbae, 4 liang), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 3 liang), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, 3 liang), Shiliu Pi (Pericarpium Granati, 3 pieces).
These seven herbs are boiled in seven sheng of water until reduced to two sheng and five he, strained, then Ejiao is added and boiled until melted. The decoction is divided into three doses.
It further states: To treat repletion of the Small Intestine with heat-distension and oral sores, use the Zihu Xieyang Fang (Bupleurum Decoction for Draining Yang):
Zihu (Radix Bupleuri, 3 liang), Ju Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 3 liang), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 3 liang), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis, 3 liang), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 3 liang), Xuanfuhua (Flos Inulae, 3 liang), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 3 liang), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 3 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 2 liang).
