The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: Tongue swelling in infants is caused by heat in both the Heart and Spleen. The pathogenic Qi rises to the mouth, resulting in tongue swelling.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) records: Use soot from the bottom of a cauldron, mixed with vinegar, and apply it to the tongue.
Another prescription: Have the child hold sugar and vinegar in their mouth for a while; once the warm Qi circulates freely, the condition will resolve.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Teeth are the extremities of bones and are nourished by marrow. If an infant has insufficient congenital Qi, the marrow cannot fill the teeth and bones, causing delayed tooth eruption.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Prescriptions by Master Ge) records: Use a thin strip woven from bamboo splints, face east, and rub the area where teeth should emerge until the skin is slightly broken; the teeth will then grow. This method is highly effective.
The *Jiyao Fang* (Essential Prescriptions) records: Take fourteen pieces of female rat feces. Rub one piece on the area where teeth should emerge, continuing until all fourteen are used. After twenty-one days, the teeth should erupt. (Current commentary: The *Duanju Fang* specifies that female rat feces are characterized by being large at one end and small at the other.)
Su Jing’s Commentary on the Materia Medica states: Scraping bamboo or wood fragments found in human feces on the first day of the New Year and administering them will cause teeth to erupt.
The *Chan Jing* (Classic of Childbirth) states: Take fourteen soybeans from cow dung, gently open the child's mouth, and apply them to the gum area; the teeth will then grow. (This matches the *Ge Shi Fang*.)
The *Fan Wang Fang* (Prescriptions by Fan Wang) for treating bleeding from the gums and between teeth in young children, where the gums appear dark red or black: Kill a live sparrow and apply its blood to the gums and between the teeth; the condition will heal. This method has been verified as effective.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Heat in the meridians and blood-Qi of infants often leads to epistaxis (nosebleed).
The *Jiyao Fang* records: Wrap horse manure in thin cotton and insert it into the nostril.
Another prescription: Burn the manure to ash, take a small amount, and blow it into the nostril.
The *Chan Jing* states: Melt E-Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), mix with water, and apply the mixture to the forehead; this is beneficial.
Another prescription: Write "Today is Blood Taboo" on the forehead; the bleeding will stop.
Yet another prescription: Write "Blood flows endlessly into the East Sea" on the forehead; this is beneficial.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Cold wind-Qi invading the head and stagnating in the nasal cavity prevents the free flow and harmonization of Qi, leading to congestion and blockage, thus causing nasal obstruction.
The *Chan Jing* records a prescription for infant nasal obstruction with discharge:
Xingren (Apricot Seed, 2 fen) Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, 1 fen) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, 1.5 fen) Xixin (Asarum, 1 fen)
Crush these four herbs, soak them in five he of strong vinegar overnight. Prepare the next morning. Separately, melt five liang of lard over low heat until the Fuzi turns yellow. Strain the mixture through cotton wool to remove dregs. Apply the resulting ointment to the nasal cavity twice daily.
Another method: Part the child's hair and massage the area around the anterior fontanelle with the ointment ten or more times; this is beneficial.
The *Qianjin Fang* records a prescription for nasal pain:
Frequently apply oil to the inside and outside of the nose.
Another prescription: Applying butter (su) is superior.
