According to the *Bingyuan Lun* (Treatise on the Origins and Manifestations of Diseases), there are three reasons for a woman's infertility. First, ancestral grave Feng Shui issues preventing lineage continuation; second, the husband and wife's birth years and fates being mutually incompatible; third, illness in either the husband or the wife, all of which result in infertility. If the cause is related to ancestral graves or fate incompatibility, these two aspects cannot be remedied by medicine. However, if the cause is illness in the husband or wife, treatment with medication is necessary and can be effective. Nevertheless, female infertility due to other causes generally stems from exhaustion damaging Qi and Blood, and an imbalance of cold and heat. Pathogenic Wind-Cold invades and lodges in the Uterus, causing disease within the Bao Gong (Uterus). This may manifest as scanty or amenorrheic menstruation, or metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, leading to disharmony of Yin and Yang Qi and irregular menstrual flow, thus resulting in infertility.
It also states: For men who are infertile, their semen is clear like water and cold like iron, rendering them unable to procreate.
It further states: In cases where ejaculation occurs but semen does not project outward, remaining gathered at the glans penis, infertility results.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: Generally, infertility in couples is caused by both partners suffering from the Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries.
