Huangfu Mi stated: Some individuals experience stranguria (strangury) with inability to urinate due to heat accumulating in the lower body after prolonged sitting or from the heat of a horse saddle, causing heat to enter the Bladder. In such cases, washing the lower abdomen with cold food or cold water, and applying hot compresses with cold stones can stop the symptoms within one day.
The *Seng Shen Fang* treats difficulty in urination caused by taking San Shi (Five Minerals Powder). The condition resembles stranguria. The prescription is as follows:
Bai Jiu Kui Zi (Winter Melon Seed / *Abelmoschus manihot* seed, 5 he)
Take the single herb, add two and a half sheng of water, decoct to obtain one sheng of liquid. Administer once during the day; urination will become smooth shortly thereafter.
The *Lu Yan Fang* states: A prescription for resolving the blockage and oppression caused by taking San Shi, where urination is obstructed resembling stranguria:
Da Huang (*Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*, 1 liang)
Ma Zi Ren (*Cannabis Fructus*, 0.5 jin)
Shao Yao (*Paeoniae Radix Alba*, 1 liang)
Fu Ling (*Poria*, 2 liang)
Huang Qin (*Scutellariae Radix*, 1 liang)
Take these five herbs, add five sheng of water, decoct to obtain two and a half sheng of liquid. Divide into two doses for administration. (This is identical to the *Duan Ju Fang*.)
The *Guang Li Fang* states: A prescription for headache caused by Stone Qi, irritability, heat sensation, dry mouth, and scanty dark red urine:
Lu Feng Fang (*Vespa Scoparia Nidus*, 12 fen, roasted)
Take this single herb, add two large sheng of water, decoct to obtain eight da he of liquid. Divide into two warm doses. This should promote diuresis, allowing various toxic residues from the minerals to be expelled through urination.
The *Bing Yuan Lun* (Treatise on the Origins and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: For those who take mineral powders, the heat of the minerals returns to the Kidney, generating internal heat. This heat binds in the Small Intestine, causing obstruction and涩ness (astringency/stagnation) in the Bao Luo (Bladder), thus leading to urinary retention.
The *Duan Ju Fang* states: A divine and excellent prescription for resolving San Shi and treating urinary obstruction:
Sang Piao Xiao (*Mantis Ootheca*, 30 pieces)
Huang Qin (*Scutellariae Radix*, 1 liang)
Take these two herbs, add one sheng of water, decoct to obtain four he of liquid. Administer all at once in a single dose.
The *Lu Yan Fang* states: An excellent Winter Melon Seed Decoction for resolving San Shi and promoting diuresis:
San Sui Kui Zi (Three-year-old Winter Melon Seed / *Abelmoschus manihot* seed, 1 sheng)
Take this single herb, add three sheng of water, decoct to obtain one and a half sheng of liquid. Consume it in one go, at any temperature preferred. If unable to consume it all at once, another version adds Hua Shi (Talcum, 3 liang).
Huangfu Mi stated: Some individuals experience dense and frequent urination due to sitting on hot foods or consuming various heat-inducing items such as cakes and millet. Washing the lower abdomen with cold water can stop this spontaneously. If not improved, soaking the genitals in cold water is also beneficial. If still unresolved, administering Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction) will resolve it.
The *Duan Ju Fang* states: A single-herb Winter Melon Seed Decoction for resolving San Shi, clearing heat, and treating frequent, scanty urination. It also treats stranguria and urinary obstruction. Three-year-old Winter Melon Seeds may also be used.
Chen Kui Gen (Old Winter Melon Root, sliced, 1 sheng)
Add three sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng of liquid. Warm it to a temperature similar to human skin, and administer in small, divided doses.
The *Wai Tai Mi Yao Fang* states Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction):
Zhi Zi Ren (*Gardeniae Fructus*, 2 he)
Gan Cao (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*, 2 liang, roasted)
Huang Qin (*Scutellariae Radix*, 2 liang)
Mang Xiao (*Natrii Sulfas*, 2 liang, added when the decoction is finished)
Add five sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng of liquid. Divide into two warm doses. Cure is achieved when bowel movement is promoted.
