The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: The Kidney governs the waist and legs. After taking mineral drugs (Shiyao), heat accumulates in the Kidney. If care is improper, triggering the "stone heat," the qi attacks the waist and legs. The momentum of the stone drug clashes with the blood and qi, resulting in hot, swollen, and painful feet. The presentation involves irritative heat in the feet and lower back pain.
Huangfu Mi stated: In some cases, foot pain is so severe it feels as if breaking; sitting down feels warm and comfortable. One should frequently sit on a cool bed and wash with cold water before standing up to walk. He also stated: In some cases, lower back pain is so severe it feels as if breaking; while sitting, clothing adheres to the body feeling warm. One should wash with cold water and apply cold stones for moxibustion-like warming (ironing/pressing).
Huangfu Mi stated: In some cases, all joints ache (pronunciation note: same as below). Lying or sitting feels too heavy due to thick bedding, entering warm quilts, and wearing warm clothes without removing them. When lying down, one should use extremely thin and large blankets. The quilt should be single-layer cloth; do not wear cotton-padded clothes. Clothes should also be thin and old; therefore, do not wear new clothes, but rather wear old wadding. Even in winter cold, one should frequently expose the head to wind and apply cold stones for pressing. Initially, the belt should not be tied tightly. If one suffers from acid-numbness and stuffiness under these conditions, immediately enter a cold water bath; do not endure the illness out of fear of bathing.
The *Jiyao Fang* (Extremely Essential Prescriptions) states: After taking milk stone (Rushi), if one fails to take proper precautions, leading to rushing heat and loss of appetite, one may experience aversion to cold, headache, and joint aches (pronunciation note: meaning pain).
