According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases), "Shuipi" (Water Stagnation) is formed by the accumulation of water qi due to the failure to digest ingested fluids. The pathology lies on both sides of the hypochondrium; pain occurs upon movement, and the patient cannot tolerate wind and cold.
According to *Xiaoyan Fang* (Effective Prescriptions), one may administer various purgative herbs to drain it.
According to *Xuangan Fang*: Moxibustion should be applied thirty moxa cones at each side of the umbilicus.
Another prescription: Apply moxibustion to two acupoints in the intercostal space below the nipples, one finger-breadth away.
According to *Xinlu Fang*: Process apricot kernels into a syrup or pills, take orally with wine, size of a jujube, three times daily.
Another prescription: Apply moxibustion using peach kernels as reference.
Another prescription: Roast barley alone, grind into powder, and take as described above.
According to *Shennong Bencao Jing*: Grind twenty castor seeds in water; ingestion will induce vomiting of foul foam.
According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun*: Sudden severe swelling of the body and face is also a sign of water disease. Due to Spleen deficiency failing to control water, fluid overflows and spreads into the skin, causing sudden severe swelling of the body.
*Fan Wang Fang* treats sudden massive swelling with Da Ji Decoction for Washing:
Da Ji (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae, four liang), Mang Cao (Herba Cnidii, two liang), Yin Yu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii, two liang), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, two liang), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, two liang), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, two liang), Ting Li (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, two liang).
These eight substances are all cut into pieces, boiled in fifteen sheng of water until reduced to ten sheng, strained to remove dregs, and used to wash the swollen area, three times daily.
It also states: To treat various sudden swellings with wind-induced pulling pain: Powder mustard seeds, mix with warm water, apply on paper to the affected area, replace when dry. If pain is unbearable, apply sparingly for heat syndromes.
*Seng Shen Fang* treats sudden swelling:
Break an egg, stir the yolk and white together, and apply to the swollen area; reapply when dry. This is highly effective.
Another prescription: Boil one sheng of soybeans, drink the juice, eat no more than three portions of beans; this is beneficial.
*Luoshou Fang* treats sudden swelling: Crush Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, apply thinly to the site; it will subside after two or three applications.
*Ge Shi Fang* treats sudden massive swelling of the whole body and face:
For such swelling, whether caused by deficient qi, cold wind qi, or water-drink qi, this formula treats all: Use one large carp, processed with three sheng of pure sour vinegar...
Another prescription: Boil one sheng of soybeans, strain, drink the juice and eat the beans; recovery is certain within three doses. Adzuki beans are also suitable.
Another prescription: Boil one dou of soybeans in five dou of water until reduced to two dou, remove the beans, add eight sheng of wine, and boil again until nine sheng remain. Divide into three or four doses; the swelling will resolve.
Another prescription: Apply moxibustion, three cones, at Bai Rou Ji (White Flesh Margin) located below the medial malleolus of the foot.
It also states: To treat swelling entering the abdomen causing fullness and hindering eating: Ting Li (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, seven liang), Jiao Mu (Semen Zanthoxyli, three liang), Fu Ling (Poria, two liang), Wu Zhu Yu (Fructus Evodiae, two liang)...
Another prescription: Da Ji (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae), Wu Shan (Iris Tectorii Rhizome), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (two liang each). Pound, sieve, and make honey pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take two pills in the morning; expect purgation.
Another prescription: If swelling starts from the feet and progresses upward, becoming fatal once it enters the abdomen, treat it thus: Slice one fresh pig liver finely and consume it all at once. Do not use salt; only vinegar may be added.
Another prescription: Drink decoction of fermented soybeans (Chi), and apply the dregs to the feet.
