The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: Spleen and Stomach deficiency fails to control water metabolism, causing water to scatter and overflow into the skin. When combined with wind-dampness pathogenic factors, it is termed Feng Shui (Wind Edema).
The Cong Dou Xi Tang (Scallion and Bean Wash Decoction) from the *Duan Ju Fang* (Short Formulas) treats deficiency-heat and Shi Re (Stone Heat, a type of febrile disease) contracted by sleeping in the wind and dew or being injured by cold-dampness affecting the muscles. This leads to heat toxins accumulating internally, evolving into Re Feng Shui (Heat Wind Edema). Symptoms include swelling and fullness in the heart and abdomen, shortness of breath preventing lying flat, head edema, difficult urination, constipation, and limb edema resembling water-filled bladders. The limbs shake with a sound like that of an old silkworm (Hu Guang fan pronunciation, describing the shape of an old silkworm), with a color similar to that of an old silkworm. The scrotum becomes hard and swollen like a beanbag, and the penis swells with sores resembling a dead rat. These are all due to deficiency. Apply Cong Dou Gao (Scallion and Bean Ointment) externally. Additionally, wash the ulcerated penis and swollen scrotum with Zhu Ti Tang (Pig Trotter Decoction).
Formula: Scallion white parts (chopped, 1 sheng) Tribulus seeds (1 sheng, pounded) Red Adzuki Beans (1 sheng) Radish seeds (1 sheng, pounded) Descurainia leaves (1 sheng, pounded)
Take the above six herbs, boil in 12 dou of water until reduced to 8 dou. Use the liquid to wash the edematous areas of the body. The formulas for Cong Dou Gao and Zhu Ti Tang are found in this chapter.
It also states: Ting Li Zi Hui Shen Jiu (Lepidium Seed Revitalizing Wine) treats Feng Shui causing generalized massive edema, where the skin feels tight as if cracking. After ingestion, urination becomes smooth, and edema subsides spontaneously. Formula: Brew clear wine five dou in spring (another version says five sheng); add three sheng of Ting Li Zi (Lepidium Seeds), roasted, and soak in the wine for two nights. Take one ge initially, increasing gradually until the disease is cured.
The *Ji Yao Fang* (Essential Formulas) provides a formula for treating Feng Shui toxic qi causing whole-body swelling: Pig Bladder Skin (3 liang) Mulberry Root Bark (5 liang) Tangerine Peel (1 liang) Perilla Leaf (2 liang) Fresh Ginger (4 liang) Soybeans (3 sheng)
Boil the above ingredients in nine sheng of water until reduced to one sheng. Divide into four doses. Complete three courses. Avoid salty foods and vinegar within 100 days.
The *Jing Xin Fang* (Classic Heart Formulas) offers Da Dou Jian (Soybean Decoction) for treating Feng Shui: Fresh Mulberry Root Bark (finely chopped, 3 sheng, taken from roots penetrating one chi into the soil) Soybeans (1 dou)
Boil these two ingredients in six and a half dou of water until reduced to one dou. Strain, add two sheng of Fresh Ginger Juice, and decoct again until four sheng remain. Divide into five doses. Take one ge per dose. Administer three times daily and once at night.
It also states: Qian Niu Wan (Pharbitis Pill) treats leg swelling and fullness, inability to walk, and various other toxic edema conditions. Formula: Rhubarb (2 liang) Mirabilite (3 liang, roasted) Pharbitis Seeds (7 liang, roasted) Peach Kernels (2 liang, de-husked and roasted) Dried Ginger (2.5 liang) Ginseng (2 liang)
Pound the above seven herbs into powder, sift, and mix with honey, pounding ten thousand times. Form pills the size of wu zi (Chinese apricot seeds). Take twenty pills per dose. Stop when mild diarrhea occurs; edema will cease. If not cured, complete the entire course.
The *Seng Shen Fang* (Monk Shen's Formulas) treats Feng Shui edema and Zheng Pi (abdominal masses) using Chang Lu Jiu (Chang Lu Root Wine): Chang Lu Gen (1 sheng, chopped)
Soak this single herb in two dou of pure wine for three nights. Take one sheng; bowel movement should follow. If defecation occurs, reduce the dose by half a sheng. Take three times daily. Reduce dosage for those who cannot tolerate alcohol.
It also states: For generalized edema caused by wind-deficiency and water qi, and for acute swelling and pain, use Pu Huang Jiu (Polygonatum Wine). Formula: Pollen Typhae (1 sheng) Adzuki Beans (1 sheng) Soybeans (1 sheng)
Boil the above three herbs in one dou of clear wine until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses.
The *Qi Po Fang* (Qi Po's Formulas) treats human Feng Shui Qi, characterized by facial and body swelling, rebellious Qi with abdominal distension, anorexia, emaciation confined to bed, and chronic non-resolution. Formula: Adzuki Beans (3 sheng) Hemp Seeds (3 sheng, pounded and extracted with water for juice) Mulberry Root Bark (1 jin)
Boil together until beans are cooked. Consume the beans and drink the juice to induce profuse urination, leading to immediate recovery.
Su Jing's Commentary on Materia Medica notes: Boiled carp meat treats water-Qi edema.
Another formula: Consuming Duck Fat and eating duck heads treats edema.
Another formula: Boiling soybeans in Ash Lye Juice and drinking it eliminates lower-jiao edema.
