The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: In cases of Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) accompanied by vomiting and hiccups, this occurs because after vomiting and diarrhea, the Stomach Qi becomes deficient, leading to rebellious Qi ascent causing vomiting. When this rebellious Qi encounters cold, it is obstructed; when Qi flow is blocked, hiccups ensue.
The *Fan Wang Fang* provides a prescription for treating Huoluan with vomiting, hiccups, and Qi reversal resulting in difficulty breathing:
Fermented Soybean Paste (Xiangchi), 1 sheng; Pinellia Rhizome Processed with Ginger (Banxia), 1 liang; Licorice Root (Gancao), 1 liang; Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Shengjiang), 2 liang; American Ginseng Root (Renshen), 1 liang; Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), 1 liang.
These six ingredients are decocted in 5 sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remains. Take 7 ge per dose, three times daily.
Another prescription: Pinellia Rhizome Processed with Ginger (Banxia), 2 liang; Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Shengjiang), 2 liang. Decoct in 3 sheng of water until 1.2 sheng remains. Divide into two doses.
The *Ge Shi Fang* states: For Huoluan presenting with hiccups, moxibustion should be applied to the first crease at the wrist, seven moxa cones, known as the Xin Zhu (Heart Master) point, located corresponding to the middle finger.
The *Duan Ju Fang* provides a prescription for treating Huoluan with vomiting, hiccups, and retching that persists for a long time:
Moxibustion is applied to the Juque (CV14) and Zhongwan (CV12) points, fifty cones each. (Current verification: The Juque point is located one cun above the end of the Jianwei bone; Zhongwan, also known as Taicang, is located one cun below the Shangwan point.)
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: In cases of Huoluan with dry retching, after vomiting and purging, the Spleen and Stomach become deficient and cold, the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) fails to regulate properly, Qi stagnation and knotting occur in the epigastrium, and Qi rebels upward intermittently.
The *Duan Ju Fang* provides a prescription for treating Huoluan where the patient desires to drink but immediately experiences dry retching upon drinking:
Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Shengjiang), 5 liang. Decoct in 5 sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remains. Divide into two doses. This yields good results.
It further states: For treating dry retching, hiccups, and cold extremities, use the Jupi Tang (Citrus Peel Decoction):
Aged Tangerine Peel (Jupi), 4 liang; Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Shengjiang), 0.5 jin.
These two ingredients are decocted in 7 sheng of water until 3 sheng remains. Take 1 sheng per dose. Upon swallowing the decoction, the illness will resolve immediately.
The *Ge Shi Fang* provides a prescription for treating Huoluan with dry retching: Moxibustion is applied between the two tendons three cun behind the wrist, seven cones on each side, known as the Jianshi (PC5) point.
Another prescription: Take one handful (one tiger's mouth grip) of Scallion Bulb (Xie). Decoct in 2 sheng of water until 1.5 sheng remains. Consume it; no more than three administrations are needed.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: In cases of Huoluan with irritability and thirst, severe purging depletes the Body Fluids (Jinye). Depletion of Body Fluids leads to dryness of the Zang organs, which causes thirst. If irritability and thirst persist, the patient will desire to drink.
The *Ge Shi Fang* provides a prescription for treating Huoluan where excessive drinking after vomiting and purging can lead to death:
Use 5 sheng of Yellow Millet (Huangliang Mi) and 1 dou of water. Decoct until 3 sheng remains. Clarify the liquid and drink it slowly; do not consume all the remaining liquid at once.
The *Yi Men Fang* provides a prescription for treating Huoluan with heat sensation in the heart, irritability, and thirst: Soak Glutinous Rice (Nuomi) in water and grind it. Mix with cooled boiled water, extract the rice wash water (Mi Gan), and drink freely to settle the condition.
The *Seng Shen Fang* provides a prescription for treating Huoluan with irritability and thirst after vomiting: Perilla Seed (Zisuzi), 1 sheng. Decoct in 5 sheng of water until 2 sheng remains. Divide into two doses. If seeds are unavailable, use one handful of fresh Perilla Leaf (Sheng Su).
The *Duan Ju Fang* provides a prescription for treating Huoluan with irritability and thirst: Drink Ji Mi Zhi (rice juice/wash water); drinking several sheng leads to immediate recovery.
Another prescription: Drink freshly drawn cold water.
The *Ji Yan Fang* states: For treating Huoluan with thirst, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) is the primary treatment.
