*Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: In cases of Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) accompanied by unceasing diarrhea, it is due to coldness in both the intestines and stomach, combined with underlying deficiency, resulting in the failure to digest grain qi.
*Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) provides a formula for treating Huoluan with severe diarrhea and abdominal pain: Take one handful of Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf), add three sheng of water, boil down to one sheng, and take it all at once; this is effective.
It further states: For sudden vomiting and uncontrollable diarrhea in Huoluan, Ren Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) is the primary treatment. The formula is as follows:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (2 liang) Fu Ling (Poria) (2 liang) Gegen (Kudzu Root) (2 liang) Ju Pi (Citrus Peel) (2 liang) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (2 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (2 liang)
These six ingredients are boiled in five sheng of water until two sheng remain, divided into three doses.
*Ge Shi Fang* (Ge's Formulas) provides a formula for treating Huoluan with unceasing diarrhea:
Moxibustion is applied to the lateral white flesh margin, one cun inside from the proximal interphalangeal joint of the great toe, seven moxa cones on each side. This acupoint is named Dadu (SP-2).
It further states: For treating Huoluan with unceasing vomiting and diarrhea:
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) and Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) each 1 liang, boiled in two sheng of water until one sheng remains, taken in one dose.
It further states: Moxibustion is applied to the sides of both breasts, near the axilla on the medial and lateral white flesh margins, seven moxa cones each.
Current analysis: For treating Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) and Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) are the primary treatments, as mentioned in the preceding section.
It further states: If severe diarrhea occurs first, moxibustion is applied one cun from the edge of the umbilicus, on the left side for males and the right side for females, fourteen moxa cones. It also states: For unceasing vomiting and diarrhea, moxibustion is applied at the midpoint one fu below the umbilicus, seven moxa cones.
*Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: In Huoluan accompanied by vomiting, cold qi enters the stomach, causing disorder of Stomach Qi. When cold pathogens are strong and grain qi is discordant, Stomach Qi rebels upward.
*Ge Shi Fang* provides a formula for treating unceasing vomiting in Huoluan:
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) 5 liang, boiled in five sheng of water until two and a half sheng remain, divided into three doses.
*Seng Shen Fang* (Monk Shen's Formulas) provides a formula for treating Huoluan with restlessness and pain, unceasing vomiting, and muscle cramps (Zhuan Jin):
Sheng Xiang Ru (Fresh Elsholtzia Herb) (one handful) Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) (2 liang) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (3 liang)
These three ingredients are boiled in seven sheng of water until two sheng remain, divided into two doses; this is very effective.
It further states: For Huoluan vomiting where water and medicine cannot be retained, use the Zhu Yu Tang (Evodia Decoction):
Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) (1 sheng) Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) (2 liang) Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) (1 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 liang) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (3 liang)

These five ingredients are sifted into powder. At the onset of illness, mix and form pills. If vomiting and diarrhea are unceasing, mix with Ku Jiu (Vinegar) and take two pills the size of wutong seeds per dose.
