Jiu Zheng Cang Zhu San (Nine-Steamed Atractylodes Powder): Using only one herb, Rhizoma Atractylodis (Cangzhu), subjected to nine steaming and nine sun-drying cycles, ground into an extremely fine powder. For each dose, take one qian (approx. 3-5g) mixed with rice water (Jiangshui).
Shun Qi Xiao Shi Hua Tan Wan (Regulating Qi, Digesting Food, and Resolving Phlegm Pill): This formula is indicated for abdominal pain caused by damp-phlegm.
Abdominal pain due to damp-phlegm represents an excess condition of the Earth element. The Classics state: "When Earth becomes excessive, Wood should be used to level it." After nine steaming and nine drying cycles, Rhizoma Atractylodis (Cangzhu) acquires a light, clear, and mild nature; it belongs to the category of Wind-Wood herbs that overcome dampness. Therefore, it is highly effective in treating abdominal pain caused by damp-phlegm.
Fructus Perillae (Zisuzi, preferably those that sink in water), Semen Sinapis Albae (Baijiezi), Fructus Raphani Sativi (Luobozhi/Laifuzi) (each 3 qian).
This formula is indicated for elderly patients with abundant phlegm and robust qi.
Phlegm does not move on its own; it moves with the Qi. Thus, when Qi ascends, phlegm ascends; when Qi descends, phlegm descends; when Qi flows freely, phlegm moves with it; when Qi stagnates, phlegm stagnates. In this formula, Fructus Raphani Sativi (Laifuzi) consumes Qi, Fructus Perillae (Zisuzi) directs Qi downward, and Semen Sinapis Albae (Baijiezi) promotes the flow of Qi. When Qi is consumed, pathogenic factors are not solid; when Qi descends, phlegm does not rebel upward; when Qi flows smoothly, the chest and diaphragm naturally become spacious. How could there be phlegm disorders? Feixia Zi created this formula for filial sons serving their parents. Although treating phlegm by regulating Qi is merely a symptomatic treatment (treating the branch), it is ultimately inferior to Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) in its subtlety of strengthening the Spleen, removing dampness, and treating the root. However, for conditions of Qi excess, Yang Qin Tang (Nourishing Parents Decoction) is also a direct and expedient formula.
Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi, 1 jin, remove white pith, wash with salt water), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao, 2 liang, honey-fried).
Grind together into powder and make pills.
For vomiting phlegm from above and diarrhea of phlegm from below, this formula is excellent.
Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi) has the function of resolving phlegm and draining Qi; Salt possesses the salty flavor and moistening, downward-draining property; Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao) has the wonder of harmonizing herbs and regulating the Middle Jiao; after honey-frying, it has the ability to strengthen the Spleen and benefit the Stomach. Master Zhu Danxi slightly added Rhizoma Arisaematis (Xing) and Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata (Banxia) to dry the source of phlegm production; he slightly added Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin) and Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian) to suppress the flame that stirs phlegm.
Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata (Banxia), Rhizoma Arisaematis cum Bile (Dannanxing) (each 3 jin), Massa Medicata Fermentata (Shenqu, stir-fried), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren, remove skin and tips), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi, remove white pith), Fructus Raphani Sativi (Laifuzi, raw use), Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Gegen), Cortex Crataegi (Shanzha Rou, stir-fried), Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Qingpi, remove albedo, stir-fried), Fructus Perillae (Zisuzi, sinking variety), Rhizoma Cyperi (Xiangfu, processed), Frumentum Germinatum (Maiya) (each 1 liang).
This formula is indicated for fullness and oppression in the chest and epigastrium caused by phlegm generated from dietary irregularities.
The pungent nature of Rhizoma Arisaematis (Xing) and Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata (Banxia) can dry damp-phlegm; the cooling nature of Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Gegen) can resolve alcohol-heat; the digestive properties of Massa Medicata Fermentata (Shenqu), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren - *Note: Text implies digestion context but Xingren is usually lung/bowel, here likely referring to general descending/digestive aid or typo in original context for digestion, but strictly translating text's claim*), and Cortex Crataegi (Shanzhou) can treat phlegm from food retention; the moving properties of Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Qingpi), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi), Fructus Perillae (Zisuzi), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren), Fructus Raphani Sativi (Laifuzi), and Rhizoma Cyperi (Xiangfu) can move Qi stagnation-related phlegm. Once phlegm is removed, the fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm will also disappear.
