For hemoptysis (coughing up blood), it is appropriate to drink this single substance.
Chu Cheng was a sage physician of the Qi dynasty. In his "Remnant Writings," he stated: Hemoptysis is difficult to treat; the throat cannot tolerate foreign matter, and even the slightest irritation will induce coughing. When blood seeps into the throat, the more it seeps, the more one coughs; the more one coughs, the more it seeps. Drinking urine results in less than one death per hundred, whereas taking cold-natured medicines results in no survivors out of a hundred. I therefore follow his words.
Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) (1 qian) Xingren (Apricot Seed) (40 seeds, skin and tips removed)
Stir-fry with Huangjiu (Yellow Wine) decoction until yellow. Grind these two substances into cake-like shapes, place them inside persimmon cakes, wrap in wet paper, and bake/roast. Grind finely together with the persimmon cakes, and take with rice water.
This formula is indicated for hematemesis due to lung issues (spitting up blood).
Spitting up blood (hemoptysis/lung bleeding) involves spitting out blood and is attributed to the Spleen and Stomach. Qingdai clears fire from the earth element; Xingren promotes the movement of qi in the central palace. When qi moves smoothly and fire is cleared, there is no spitting; when there is no spitting, there is no bleeding.
Heye (Lotus Leaf) (as needed, dried by roasting and ground into powder)
For spitting up blood, this formula is also effective.
When there is fire in the qi level, it causes people to spit blood; prolonged spitting disturbs the blood. Master Chu said: Although blood belongs to yin, what moves it is likely harmonious yang! Lotus leaf has the shape of an upward-facing cup, corresponds to the Zhen trigram, possesses a light and fragrant aroma, and embodies a clear and harmonious nature. Therefore, it can harmonize yang, stabilize spitting, and move blood.
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (single substance, stir-fried until brown and made into pills)
This formula is indicated for vomiting blood (hematemesis).
Vomiting (ou) differs from spitting (ke). Sound originating from the upper jiao is called ke; it is heavy and short. Sound originating from the lower jiao is called ou; it is turbid and long. Huangbai is bitter and moistening. Bitterness allows it to drain fire; moistening allows it to descend.
Cebaiye (Biota Tops) (single substance, ground into powder)
Take 3 qian mixed with rice water.
This is also a formula for treating vomiting blood.
"Ce" (side) symbolizes yin. "Bai" (biota), does not wither when encountering cold, obtaining the most concentrated yin qi. Thus, it enters the yin level and drains the fire of rebellious vomiting. However, its nature is slightly fragrant, so its subtlety lies in harmonizing yang without bias toward yin. This is why it is excellent.
Yaxuan refers to bleeding from the tooth roots, caused by heat from rich and sweet foods. Usually, after the evening meal, rinsing the mouth with tea cleanses it, and the illness heals.
