Fulonggan (Dragon's House Liver, calcined soil from the hearth) is simply the earth found within the stove. The nature of earth can tonify the Spleen; having been subjected to firewood and flames for a long time, it possesses the ability to warm the Middle Jiao. For individuals with Spleen and Stomach deficiency, it is appropriate to add this substance to herbal prescriptions.
Narrative: Food and drink are used to nourish life, which is an urgent need for everyone. However, food and drink can also harm life, representing a mistake made by people. Yan Di (the Divine Farmer) taught the people to use farming tools for cultivation in order to nourish life. Subsequently, he tasted hundreds of medicinal substances out of fear of harming life. Within the practice of nourishing life, there exist hazards that harm life; this is why the gentleman exercises caution regarding his dietary and bodily needs. Now, examining these nineteen prescriptions, they offer a minor benefit to those who seek to preserve health!
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Caodoukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian); Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (4 qian); Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (each 3 qian); Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) (roasted); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (stir-fried) (each 5 fen); Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (stir-fried) (1.5 qian).
This formula is indicated for cases where food and drink stagnation causes fullness and distension in the chest and diaphragm, accompanied by loose stools.
The *Neijing* (Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor) states: "When clear qi descends below, it generates sun-xie (diarrhea with undigested food); when turbid qi ascends above, it generates distension." This arises because dietary injury damages the Spleen, impairing its transportation and transformation functions, thereby losing the command to ascend the clear and descend the turbid. In this prescription, Shengma and Chaihu are used to ascend the clear Yang qi; Huangbai is used to descend the turbid Yin qi; Banxia and Chenpi are used to facilitate the flow of Qi in the diaphragm; Caodoukou and Shenqu are used to digest food stagnation; and Renshen, Huangqi, Danggui, and Gancao are used to tonify the Spleen. In this manner, the clear qi ascends and the turbid qi descends,
Shanzhare (Crataegi Fructus) (2 liang); Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) (each 1 liang); Boluozhi (Raphani Semen), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (each 5 qian).
This pill is indicated for internal injury caused by diet, resulting in aversion to food.
Because the diet has been injured, it causes an aversion to eating. Other formulas use harsh medicines to attack the stagnation, which constitutes injuring the body again after it has already been injured. The ingredients in this formula are mild and beneficial, following the principle of tonic prescriptions. Hence, it is named "Baohe" (Preserving Harmony). Shanzha is sweet and sour; since sour overcomes sweet, it can eliminate accumulations of rich and sweet foods. Shenqu is sweet and fermented; since fermented properties overcome charred ones, it can resolve the greasiness of fried and roasted foods. Boluozhi (Radish Seed) is pungent and bitter; since bitter directs Qi downward, it can resolve stagnation caused by wheat-based foods. Chenpi is pungent and aromatic; since aroma overcomes staleness, it can dissipate stale Qi. Lianqiao is pungent and bitter; since bitter drains Fire, it can remove heat generated by stagnation. Banxia is pungent and drying; since dryness overcomes dampness, it can resolve the accumulation of fluids and food. Fuling is sweet and bland; since blandness promotes leaching, it can promote urination to resolve stagnation caused by dampness.
