Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Ligustici Rhizoma (Ben) [soil removed], Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (each 2 qian); Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui) [bark removed, not used in summer, used in autumn and winter]; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) (each 3 qian); Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) (each 1 qian); Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) (6 fen); Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao); Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) [processed, skin and umbilicus removed, each 1.5 qian]; Persicae Semen (Taoren) [10 seeds, skin and tips removed]; Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaooyao), Carthami Flos (Honghua) (each 5 fen).
This formula is indicated for women suffering from metrorrhagia and metrostaxis (excessive uterine bleeding).
Yang governs ascending, Yin governs descending; Yang is rooted in Yin, and Yin is rooted in Yang. Movement and stillness are mutually foundational; thus, ascending and descending follow the meridians without causing collapse or prolapse. If Yang is in excess, the ascending force prevails, and blood exits through the upper orifices. If Yang is deficient, the descending force prevails, and blood exits through the lower orifices. In this formula, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) are herbs that strengthen Yang and benefit Qi. Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Ligustici Rhizoma (Ben), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), and Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) are herbs that raise Yang and elevate the menses. Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Dihuang), Carthami Flos (Honghua), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), and Persicae Semen (Taoren) are herbs that nourish Yin and enter the Blood level. Strengthening Yang ensures Qi is not deficient; elevating the menses ensures Blood does not sink; nourishing Yin ensures Blood is not dry. Indeed, if so, Blood becomes the guardian of Qi, and Qi becomes the defender of Blood; Blood nourishes internally, and Qi defends externally; ascending and descending follow the meridians completely. How could metrorrhagia occur?
Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) (each 5 liang); Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix et Rhizoma (Qinjiao), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) (each 2 liang); Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gegen) (3 liang); Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji) (1 liang).
Contemporary practitioners divide this into ten doses.
This formula is indicated for postpartum wind-stroke presenting with trismus (lockjaw) and opisthotonos (arching of the back).
After childbirth, both Qi and Blood are deficient, making one susceptible to Wind and Cold pathogens. Wind damaging the sinews causes spasms; Cold damaging the sinews causes pain; hence, trismus and opisthotonos occur. In this formula, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix et Rhizoma (Qinjiao), Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gegen), and Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji) are dispersing-Wind herbs. Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin) and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) are dispelling-Cold herbs. When Wind is eliminated, sinews do not spasm; when Cold is eliminated, sinews do not hurt. Danggui is used to nourish Blood after dispersing Wind. Shengjiang, Baizhu, and Gancao are used to regulate Qi after dispelling Cold. The necessity to nourish Blood and regulate Qi stems from the principle that postpartum deficiency must never be forgotten.
