Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi).
Zhu Danxi stated: Hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) occurring on the right side belongs to Qi deficiency; this formula is used to treat it.
The *Classic of Internal Medicine* (*Huangdi Neijing*) states: The left and right sides are the pathways of Yin and Yang Qi. Therefore, the left pertains to Blood, and the right pertains to Qi. For conditions of Qi deficiency, they should be tonified with sweet substances; thus, Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) are used. These four herbs are referred to as "Junzi" (Gentlemen) because their flavors are sweet and neutral, possessing a harmonious and mild virtue, without the nature of attacking or damaging healthy tissue. The addition of Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) is to promote the movement of Phlegm; the addition of Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi) is to prevent the stagnation caused by the cloying nature of Bamboo Sap, thereby jointly achieving the effect of dispelling Phlegm.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, washed with wine), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, washed to remove soil), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao, stir-fried with wine), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang), Persicae Semen (Taoren, skin and尖 removed), Carthami Flos (Honghua, washed with wine), Bamboo Sap (Zhuli).
Zhu Danxi stated: Hemiplegia occurring on the left side belongs to Blood stasis; this formula is used to treat it.
Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao), and Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang) are herbs that generate Blood. When new Blood is generated, old Blood stasis becomes slippery and easy to eliminate; Persicae Semen (Taoren) and Carthami Flos (Honghua) are herbs that resolve Blood stasis. When Blood stasis is eliminated, new Blood becomes clear and easy to generate. However, the reason for also adding Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi) is that Phlegm, as a pathological product, can go anywhere, causing harm regardless of whether it is on the left or right side.
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, stir-fried), Poria (Fuling), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi, pith removed, stir-fried), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, white pith removed), Linderae Radix (Tai Wuyao), Ginseng Radix (Renshen) (each 1 qian).
In Wind-Stroke (Zhongfeng), when Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) is deficient and Phlegm-Saliva is abundant and obstructing, this formula is suitable for treatment.
Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) constitute Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction). The *Classic of Internal Medicine* states: Where pathogenic factors gather, Zheng Qi must be deficient; therefore, Si Jun Zi Tang is used to tonify Qi.
In the treatment of Phlegm, regulating Qi is prioritized; thus, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Linderae Radix (Tai Wuyao), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) are used to smooth Qi. When Qi flows smoothly, Phlegm moves, preventing obstruction. This is a treatment method that addresses both the root cause and the symptoms.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, nodes removed), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, white pith removed), Linderae Radix (Wuyao) each 1 qian, Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao, pith removed, stir-fried with bran) 2 liang, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhi Gancao), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) each 1 liang, Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, washed to remove soil), Bombyx Batryticatus (Baijiangcan, stir-fried), Zingiberis Rhizoma Aridum (Ganjiang, stir-fried until black) 0.5 liang.
For Wind-Stroke presenting with numbness and paralysis all over the body, slurred speech, deviation of the mouth and eyes, and rapid breathing with phlegm in the throat, this formula is indicated.
Numbness and paralysis all over the body indicate disharmony of Exterior Qi; thus, Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) and Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) are used for treatment. Slurred speech indicates disharmony of Interior Qi; thus, Linderae Radix (Wuyao), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), and Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao) are used. Deviation of the mouth and eyes indicates disharmony of Qi in the facial region; thus, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) and Bombyx Batryticatus (Baijiangcan) are used. Rapid breathing in the throat can be alleviated by Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao); rebellious Lung Qi can be directed downward by Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng). As for Phlegm, stagnation leads to accumulation and blockage, while heat promotes flow; Zingiberis Rhizoma Aridum (Ganjiang) is added as an assistant to move stagnation. This is a formula for treating the symptoms (biao), but it must be used when the pathogenic factor is excess and in the initial stage...
