Rhizoma Typhonii (Baifuzi), Bombyx Batryticatus (Baijiangcan), Scorpio (Quanxie)
(All used raw, ground into powder. For each dose, take 2 qian, mixed with wine.)
For stroke manifesting as deviation of the mouth and eye, without other accompanying symptoms, this formula is indicated.
Drugs such as Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae (Qiong) and Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fang) can expel exogenous wind, but they are not suitable for treating endogenous wind; Rhizoma Arisaematis cum Bile (Nanxing) and Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum (Xia) are sufficient for treating phlegm generated from damp-earth, but they are not suitable for treating phlegm caused by deficient wind. These three substances treat internal wind and resolve phlegm of deficient-heat. With wine as a guide, they can enter the collaterals and correct the deviation of the mouth and eye. It is also said: The pungency of Baifuzi can dispel wind; the saltiness of Jiangcan and Quanxie can soften phlegm; the heat within the pungency allows it to follow the nature of wind; the toxicity of Jiangcan and Quanxie allows it to break up accumulations. Physicians use medication by employing hot drugs to attack heat, or toxic drugs to attack toxicity. This corresponds to what the *Book of Changes* (*I Ching*) calls "seeking resonance through similar qi" (Tongqi Xiangqiu), and the *Inner Canon*...
Ox Gallstone Processed Rhizoma Arisaematis (Niudan Nanting) (8 qian), Costus Root (Muxiang) (1 qian)
For stroke manifesting in obese individuals with abundant phlegm and no thirst, this formula is indicated.
Nanting is a drug that dries phlegm. Given the manifestations of obesity, abundant phlegm, and absence of thirst, the suitability of drying therapy is evident; thus, Nanting serves as the principal herb. The addition of ox gall is necessary to moderate its drying property. Muxiang is added as an assistant to promote the movement of phlegm-qi.
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (deprived of radix tip), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia) (processed with ginger juice, 1 qian each), Scorpio (Quanxie) (2 qian), Ox Gallstone Processed Rhizoma Arisaematis (Dannanxing), Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhigancao), Raw Rhizoma Typhonii (Sheng Baifu), Raw Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Sheng Chuanwu)
For stroke manifesting as deviation of the mouth and eye with copious salivary phlegm, this formula is indicated.
Wind agitates phlegm, affecting the facial region, leading to deviation of the mouth and eye; obstructing the chest, it leads to copious salivary phlegm. In this formula, Fangfeng, Baifu, Quanxie, and Chuanwu can activate wind-phlegm in the collaterals and correct the deviation of the mouth and eye; Dannanxing, Banxia, Gancao, and Muxiang can treat wind-phlegm in the chest and open obstructions. The formula is named "Shengfeng," meaning to reduce or diminish wind.
Cannabis Fructus (Bimazi) (1 liang), Borneolum Syntheticum (Zhen Bingpian) (3 fen)
Pound together to make a paste. In cold months, add dried ginger (Ganjiang) and prepared aconite root (Fuzi), 1 qian each.
For stroke causing deviation of the mouth and eye to the left, apply this paste to the right side; if deviated to the right, apply to the left side. Applying it today corrects it tomorrow, hence the name "Gaorong" (Changing Appearance). Using dung beetles (Qiángláng) and borneol, or dog blood and borneol for application, are also effective. These three substances are all agents that draw out wind and extract toxins. Borneol is added for its ability to benefit qi and penetrate orifices readily; dried ginger and aconite are added for their warming properties to counter severe cold. These additions are only used in winter, not at other times.
