Coptidis Rhizoma (Liu liang) Evodiae Fructus (Yi liang, boiled in water for a short time, then dried)
Grind into fine powder and make pills.
For Yige (dysphagia with regurgitation) caused by Fire pathogen, this formula is the primary treatment.
This is precisely Zuojin Wan (Left Metal Pill). It is called "Huilin" because the bitter taste of Coptidis Rhizoma can overcome heat, thereby restoring the normal command of Fire. The acrid-hot nature of Evodiae Fructus is used to assist it, taking advantage of the method of counter-assistance to treat according to the disease's nature.
Crataegi Fructus Shenqu (Fermented Medicinal Leaven) Amomi Fructus Rotundus Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, processed with urine from an uncircumcised boy) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (soaked in rice washing water for seven days) Chuanxiong Rhizoma Gardeniae Fructus
For Yige caused by Food stagnation, this formula is the primary treatment.
Food itself does not cause Yige; it may be due to Qi obstruction or Fire depression, which then leads to food retention and results in Food Yige. Therefore, Cyperi Rhizoma, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, and Chuanxiong Rhizoma are used to smooth Qi; Gardeniae Fructus is used to drain Fire; Crataegi Fructus, Shenqu, and Amomi Fructus Rotundus are used to digest food. In ancient times, several sons of the King of Qi suffered from irritability, exhaustion, inability to eat, and frequent vomiting of saliva. Cang Gong examined them and said: "This is Food Yige disease." He prepared Xiaqi Tang (Qi-Descending Decoction) for them to drink. That formula cannot be verified today. If one considers Huangqin Lianzhang Zhizhu Wan (Scutellaria-Coptis-Aurantium-Zhu Formula) or Muxiang Binglang Wan (Aucklandia-Betel Nut Pill), their principles are also similar.
Taiping Yulan records: Hua Tuo was walking on the road when he saw a person suffering from Yige who desired to eat but could not swallow. His family loaded him onto a cart intending to seek medical help. Hearing his groans, Hua Tuo stopped his carriage, went to examine him, and told him: "Just now, beside the road, there was a pancake seller with garlic vinegar. Go take three sheng [a unit of volume] and drink it, and your illness will surely heal." Following Hua Tuo's advice, he immediately vomited up a snake-like object. Hanging it by the carriage side, he wanted to visit Hua Tuo, but Hua Tuo had not yet returned. Hua Tuo's children were playing at the door; upon seeing the visitor, they said to each other: "There is something by the guest's carriage; he must have met our master." When the patient entered, he saw dozens of such snake-like objects hanging on Hua Tuo's wall. I consider that garlic is acrid and hot, belonging to Yang within Yang. It can cause Qi fullness and mental confusion, leading to spontaneous vomiting. It is particularly suitable for conditions like snake bites, parasites, and abdominal masses. Chu Shi Zhuan states: Chu Cheng used one sheng of garlic to induce Li Daonian to vomit out a chick. Qixie Ji says: Guo Tanzhi's son ate a plot of garlic and instantly vomited out a basket containing digested food in a moment. Such is the wonderful efficacy of garlic. Few modern physicians know this. Someone asked: "Why not use Gou Di San (Melon Seed Powder)?" I replied: "For interior Heat in Shanghan (Cold Damage), one should use the bitter-cold nature of Gou Di San to induce vomiting. For parasitic masses and chronic cold conditions, one should use the acrid-hot nature of garlic and vinegar to induce vomiting. People know that bitterness can induce vomiting of Heat, but do not know that Heat can induce vomiting of Cold. Therefore, I specifically highlight this."
